The Third Article of Faith
The catechism introduces the third part of the Apostles' Creed, focusing on faith in the Holy Spirit.
The third part, 88. M: Let's move on to the third part. E: It's faith in the Holy Spirit.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit applies the redemption of Christ to the believer, cleansing the conscience and regenerating the heart.
Of the Holy Spirit and His graces 89. M: What good does it do us?1 E: So that we may recognize that, just as God has redeemed and saved us in Jesus Christ, so also He makes us, by His Holy Spirit, partakers of that redemption and of salvation. 90. Minister: How so? E: Just as the blood of Jesus Christ is our cleansing, so the Holy Spirit must also sprinkle our consciences with it, so that they may be washed clean (1 Peter 1:19). 91. Minister: We still need a clearer explanation. Child: That is to say, the Holy Spirit, dwelling in our hearts, makes us sense the power of our Lord Jesus (Romans 5:5).✦2 For he enlightens us so that we may know his graces; he seals them and imprints them on our souls, and gives them a place in us (Ephesians 1:13).✦ He regenerates us and makes us new creatures (Titus 3:5), so that through him we receive all the benefits and gifts offered to us in Jesus Christ.✦3

90. M : Comment cela? E : Comme le sang de Jésus-Christ est notre lavement, aussi faut-il que le Saint- Esprit en arrose nos consciences, à ce qu'elles soient lavées (1 Pierre 1:19).
91. M : Il faut encore déclaration plus certaine. E : C'est-à-dire que le Saint-Esprit, habitant en nos coeurs, nous fait sentir la vertu de notre Seigneur Jésus (Romains 5:5). Car il nous illumine pour nous faire connaître ses grâces; il les scelle et imprime en nos âmes et leur donne lieu en nous (Éphésiens 1:13). 11 nous régénère et fait nouvelles créatures (Tite 3:5), tellement que, par son moyen, nous recevons tous les biens et dons qui nous sont offerts en Jésus-Christ.
