The Dual Manifestation of God
God reveals His character through the exercise of both sovereign mercy toward the elect and righteous justice toward the fallen.
We believe that when the entire human race was plunged into destruction and ruin through the fault of the first man, God revealed himself as he truly is: merciful and just. He is merciful in rescuing and saving from this destruction those whom he chose and elected in Jesus Christ our Lord by his pure goodness, according to his eternal and unchangeable counsel, without regard to any of their works. He is just in leaving the others in the ruin and downfall into which they had plunged themselves.✦✦✦

Scripture echoes
- ↩Rom.5.12-Rom.5.19 — Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and through sin death, and so death spread to all people, because all sinned— Rom.5.13 — For sin was in the world before the law, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Rom.5.14 — Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of Adam's transgression, who is a type of the one who was to come. Rom.5.15 — But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the trespass of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Rom.5.16 — And the gift is not like what came through the one who sinned. For the judgment following one trespass led to condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses led to justification. Rom.5.17 — For if by the trespass of the one man death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Rom.5.18 — So then, just as through one trespass there was condemnation for all people, so also through one act of righteousness there was justification leading to life for all people. Rom.5.19 — For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
- ↩Eph.1.4-Eph.1.5;Rom.8.29-Rom.8.30 — just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love Eph.1.5 — He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, Rom.8.29 — For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Rom.8.30 — And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.
- ↩Rom.9.11-Rom.9.16;Eph.2.8-Eph.2.9 — (not yet born, and not having done anything good or bad) so that God's purpose in election might stand—not by works but by the One who calls— Rom.9.12 — It was said to her, "The older will serve the younger. Rom.9.13 — Just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." Rom.9.14 — What then shall we say? Is there injustice with God? Absolutely not! Rom.9.15 — For he says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' Rom.9.16 — So then, it does not depend on the one who wills or the one who runs, but on God who shows mercy. Eph.2.8 — For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Eph.2.9 — not by works, so that no one may boast
