Augsburg Confession (Confessio Augustana)/Book 1 · Confessio Augustana
Chapter 3ConfAug.1.3

De Filio Dei

The Incarnate Son

The Son of God took on human nature in Mary's womb, uniting two natures in one person who truly suffered and died to reconcile humanity to the Father.

Likewise, they teach that the Word—that is, the Son of God—took on human nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary, so that the divine and the human are joined together inseparably in the unity of one person: one Christ, truly God and truly man, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered, was crucified, died, and was buried, in order to reconcile us to the Father and to be a sacrifice not only for the guilt of original sin but also for all the actual sins of human beings.

Death, Resurrection, and Reign

Christ descended to the dead, rose again, ascended to the Father's right hand, and reigns over all creatures while sending the Holy Spirit to sanctify and sustain believers.

The same one descended to the dead, and truly rose again on the third day, then ascended into the heavens, so that he might sit at the right hand of the Father and reign forever and rule over all creatures, sanctifying those who believe in him, having sent into their hearts the Holy Spirit, who governs, comforts, and gives life to them, and defends them against the devil and the power of sin.

The Creedal Hope

Christ will return to judge the living and the dead, as confessed in the Apostles' Creed.

This same Christ is going to return openly, so that he may judge the living and the dead, etc. According to the Apostles' Creed.
