De la abituació del Arbre d'amor

The Means of Habituation

By constantly meditating on the Tree's parts, understanding and memory form a deep, discursive habit of love.

You can fully internalize this Tree of the Philosophy of Love by reflecting on and remembering the natures of love, just as we've described them in the roots, trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruit; by mentally tracing your way through these parts of the tree, you can firmly establish this habit of mind.12

Fruits of the Habit

Whoever masters the habituation of the Tree gains the art to grow in good love, resist evil love, and speak eloquently of the Beloved.

2. Whoever knows how to habituate this Tree well and carefully knows how to form the habit of good love, of great love, and of the other loves; and by art he'll know how to multiply good love and to resist temptations and sins, standing against bad love, and he'll know how to frame and345 solve questions of love by art, and of the Beloved he'll know how to speak and preach many good words.6

The Tree as Universal Art

Through the same art that multiplies love, one can also learn the sciences and gain insight into the Beloved, uniting knowledge and love.

3. Whoever will know this Tree well and will want to know it well and form the habit of it will, through it, be able to learn the sciences easily and by art; for by that same teaching we have given artfully for multiplying love and for loving, one can gain a method and a teaching for multiplying science and knowledge in knowing the Beloved, and His secrets and those of creatures, since what belongs to loving and understanding, uncovered through the roots of this Tree and through the other parts, help the7 one8 to the other in multiplying science and love; and therefore, through this Tree, lovers of the philosophy of science and of love will be able to gain great benefit.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Catalan abituat/abituament: habit-formation (habitus) by repeated exercise of the faculties, not mere custom or familiarity.
  2. 2 ↩assumadament: thoroughly / as a complete summary overview of the whole tree; rendered here as thoroughly.
  3. 3 ↩The source inserts the running page head «Intenció: Amor 1 5.» after «e sabrà fer e»; treated as apparatus and omitted. The clause continues in the next sentence with «soure qüestions…».
  4. 4 ↩«àbit de bona gran, e les altres, amor» read as the habit of good love, great love, and the other kinds of love (cf. Llull’s rails: bona, gran, durable, and the rest).
  5. 5 ↩«contrastar a temptacions e peccats contra mala amor» is compressed; rendered as resisting temptations and sins while standing against bad love (mala amor).
  6. 6 ↩Continues the broken clause from s2 after the page-head intrusion: «e sabrà fer e soure qüestions d amor…». «soure» taken as Old Catalan solre, ‘to solve’ (cf. elsewhere in this work: «soure les qüestions damor»).
  7. 7 ↩Source sentence breaks mid-clause here and continues in s3–s4; "rails" read as roots (arrels).
  8. 8 ↩Isolated "j." treated as the fragment "una" in s'ajuden l'una a l'altra ("help one another"), bridging s2 and s4.
