Pregueres d'amor: De mijà e amor

The Lover's Prayer of Repentance

The Lover prays that his deep repentance be made known to the Beloved.

Middle and end of love: the Lover prayed that they would tell his Beloved that he was repenting of sin very deeply.

Hope for Mercy

The Friend calls upon the greater middle of love, hoping for forgiveness and mercy from the Beloved.

ii. "Greater middle of love," said the Friend, "tell my Beloved that from him I hope, with greater hope, for forgiveness and mercy."1

The Middle Place of Love

The Lover prays that in the middle place of love the beginning and end may be made equal.

iii. The Lover prayed the Beloved that in the middle place of love He would make the beginning and the end of love equal.2

Greater Love Overcomes Lesser

The Lover declares that lesser love must not stand between him and the Beloved, for he has fallen in love with a greater love.

4. Lesser love, don't stand between me and my Beloved, for I have fallen in love with a greater love.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Catalan 'mijà' here is Llull's middle term of love (between beginning and end), not 'means' in the instrumental sense; rendered 'middle' to match neighboring sections. 'pietat' could also be 'pity' or 'compassion'; 'mercy' fits the petition for pardon.
  2. 2 ↩Source reading cgualàs treated as igualàs (“would make equal / equalize”); c for i looks like a transcription/OCR corruption.
