Pregueres d'amor: De concordansa e amor

Prayers of Sorrow and Mercy

The lover prays for concordance of love to keep him from sin, and offers prayers of contrition, sighing, and weeping, seeking mercy on a bed of justice and mercy.

The Lover prayed the concordance of love that it would keep him far from sin, and that it would bind him to his Beloved. ii. "Concordance of love," said the Lover, "since I am such a great sinner, could you begin to sigh in my heart, weep in my eyes, and cry out for mercy with my mouth?" iii. Beloved, said the Lover: my will is imprisoned in sin, and it begs Love to give it penance in loving you. iv. The Lover was sick because of sin, and he cast himself onto a bed built of justice and mercy, and he prayed their concordance to carry him to the judgment and forgiveness of his Beloved.1 v. With greater concordance of contrition, sighing, and weeping, the Lover went to his Beloved to cry for mercy.

Prayers of Penance and Shepherding

The lover calls for penance, devotion, sighing, and weeping to be equal in his loving, and prays to the concordance of lover and beloved for a shepherd of love who would be greater.

vi. Penance, devotion, sighing, and weeping: make yourselves equal in my loving, so that I may come into concord with my Beloved.2 7. Regarding the concordance between the Lover and the Beloved, he said: A shepherd of love who would not want to be lesser and who would be greater, so that he might be shepherd of great lovers.34

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source reading "cn lit" is treated as "en lit" ("onto a bed"); "cn" looks like a scribal/print corruption of "en".
  2. 2 ↩Source reading «Penetencia» taken as intended «Penitència» (penance).
  3. 3 ↩Leading "j" is read as medieval Catalan ".j." (= un, "a/one"), matching the continuous source line "deiha .j pastor damor" and parallels such as "viu .j. bel libre."
  4. 4 ↩Source "cl" is read as "él" (he), a recurrent OCR/print corruption in this witness (cf. "que cl era pus obligat").
