Pregueres d'amor: De veritat e amor

Let False Love Perish

The Friend opens by asking true Love to banish false love, then, lit by love, the Lover begs the Beloved to reveal the truth of His love to His lovers.

True love, said the Friend: don't let false love live, for it keeps its lovers under the wrath of my Beloved. ii. With lit candles and illuminated by love, the Lover went to beg his Beloved to show the truth of his love to his lovers.

Truth and Concordance in Love

Servants of love pray that truth and concordance may dwell in the mutual love shared by the Lover and the Beloved.

iii. Servants of love prayed that truth and concordance would go and dwell in the love of the Lover and the Beloved.

True Sighs and Honest Works

The Lover asks for true sighs of love to overcome his adversaries and prays that his hands and feet be placed in true love's works and paths, unlike hypocrites who feign tears for false love.

iv. The Lover prayed his Beloved to fill his heart with true sighs of love, so that he might be master of his adversaries.1 v. "True Love," said the Lover, "put my hands in your works and my feet in your paths, so that I may not be like the hypocrites who sigh and weep falsely for false love."

Clothed in Truth and True Signs

The friend asks Truth and Love to adorn his loving, and the true signs of love ask the Beloved to defend the Lover from deceptive false signs that would rob him of rest.

vi. The friend prayed that Truth and Love would adorn and clothe his loving, heal and beautify it, so that he could dwell among them. vii. True signs of love prayed the Beloved to send them to his Lover, because false signs of love wanted to deceive him and clothe his true loving in false love, so that he would always be without rest.

Increasing Truth in Love

In the final petitions, the friend prays for ever-greater truth in love—clothing, balancing, and increasing it—so that false love and the false man are overcome.

viii. The friend prayed that his love would clothe itself in greater truth, so that it would make him lord over false love, which destroys its lovers. ix. The friend prayed that truth and love would be equal in his loving, so that he would be a bold fighter against sins and false love. x. Beloved, said the friend: give me a greater truth of love, for a lesser truth of love makes me afraid of the false man.
