The Foundation of True Love

True love requires a genuine difference between friend and beloved, and cannot be feigned.

No one who loves the true glory of love falsely is a true friend. II. In the essence of love, friend and beloved cannot be named without a true difference between the two.1

The Incompatibility of Falsehood

A false lover cannot be in concord with a true beloved, and truth and love cannot dwell with falsehood.

III. For a false lover can't have concord with the true beloved; truth and love can't share themselves with a false lover. IV.2 Nothing can be contrary to true love. V. Without the truth of love, the friend can't begin to sigh truly and to love.3

The Security of True Love

When true love stands between lover and beloved, the lover has no fear of a false lover.

The Banner of True Lovers

The true end of love is the sign and banner of true and loyal lovers.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩'nombrats' can mean named/called or numbered/counted; rendered as 'named' for the essència/differencia contrast.
  2. 2 ↩Trailing 'iiij.' is the next article numeral (IV) attached to this sentence in the source segmentation; rendered in place as 'IV.' without splitting refs.
  3. 3 ↩Source 'comcnsar' read as corrupt/OCR for 'començar' (to begin); translated as 'begin'.
  4. 4 ↩Source reading "Icyals" is almost certainly a corrupt form of Catalan "leials" (loyal); translated accordingly.
  5. 5 ↩Egaltat is Llull's correlative principle of Equality; rendered as 'Equality' to keep the Art's abstract subject, not mere sameness of feeling.
  6. 6 ↩Menoritat is Llull's correlative principle of Minority/Lesserness, parallel to Egaltat in s4; 'lesserness' keeps that Art sense rather than ordinary smallness.
