Condicions d'amor: De vertut e amor

Virtue as the Treasure of Love

Virtue, truth, and love are the riches of the lover and beloved; without virtue there is no lovable glory and no ability to love, and the concordance of virtues strengthens the bond between lover and beloved.

Virtue, truth, and love are the riches and treasure of the lover and the beloved. ii. Without the virtue of love, no glory is lovable.1 Without a distinction between virtues, the lover could not love.2 iv. The harmony of virtues strengthens the harmony between the lover and the beloved.34

The Dynamics of Virtuous Loving

Virtuous love gives rise to virtuous loving, which enables the lover to desire, endure hardships, attain the end of love, and fear no greater love, while no opposition arises from virtue.

5. Opposition between lover and beloved does not arise from any virtue of love. vi. Virtuous loving arises and begins from virtuous love. vii. A lover who doesn't have virtuous loving in the middle place of love doesn't know how to desire or endure hardships for love.5 viii. Without virtuous loving, no one can reach the end of love. ix. Through no virtue does the lover fear greater loving.

The Order of Virtue in Love

No equal loves through virtue are evil, and no lesser virtue can take on the nature of a greater love.

10. No loves that are equal through virtue are evil. No lesser virtue has the nature of greater love.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩amadora can mean 'lovable' or, as an agent form, 'loving/a lover'; context favors 'lovable' (worthy of love).
  2. 2 ↩differencia is likely Llull's technical correlative 'Difference'; rendered as 'difference' to keep that force without archaic diction.
  3. 3 ↩Source 'Concordançade' read as 'Concórdança de' (missing word-break).
  4. 4 ↩concordança kept as 'concordance' for Llull's technical correlative; 'harmony' is a near-synonym in plain English.
  5. 5 ↩"mig loc d'amor" kept as Llull's technical middle place of love; "trebayls" rendered as hardships, matching parallel uses of trebayls/sustenir elsewhere in this work.
