The Lamp of Divine Light
The Theotokos is celebrated as the radiant vessel who brings the immaterial light of Christ to those dwelling in darkness.
We see the holy Virgin as a light-receiving lamp that has appeared to those in darkness; for kindling the immaterial Light, she guides everyone toward divine knowledge, illuminating the mind with her radiance, and honored by our cry she is greeted with these words: Hail, ray of the spiritual Sun; hail, flash of the light that never sets.1 Hail, lightning that floods souls with light; hail, like thunder that strikes the enemies with terror. Hail, for you make the many-rayed illumination rise; hail, for you pour forth the river that flows in many streams.2
The Fountain of Cleansing Grace
The Virgin is invoked as the source of baptismal renewal, moral cleansing, and the sweet fragrance of the mystical life.
Hail, you who paint the type of the baptismal font; hail, you who take away the filth of sin.3 Hail, washing basin that cleanses the conscience; hail, mixing bowl that blends joy.4 Hail, fragrance of Christ's sweet scent; hail, life of the mystical banquet.5 Hail, unwedded Bride.

Φωτοδόχον λαμπάδα, τοῖς ἐν σκότει φανεῖσαν, ὁρῶμεν τὴν ἁγίαν Παρθένον· τὸ γὰρ ἄυλον ἅπτουσα φῶς, ὁδηγεῖ πρὸς γνῶσιν θεϊκὴν ἅπαντας, αὐγῇ τὸν νοῦν φωτίζουσα, κραυγῇ δὲ τιμωμένη ταῦτα· Χαῖρε, ἀκτὶς νοητοῦ ἡλίου, χαῖρε, βολὶς τοῦ ἀδύτου φέγγους. - 1 ↩Φωτοδόχον λαμπάδα is rendered “light-receiving lamp” (the lamp that receives and bears light), not merely “bright lamp.” Ἅπτουσα with φῶς is taken as “kindling” the immaterial Light (Christ), the usual Akathist sense rather than a bare physical “touching.” Νοητοῦ ἡλίου is rendered “spiritual Sun” rather than the technical “noetic Sun.”
- 2 ↩Πολύφωτον φωτισμόν is kept as “many-rayed illumination” (abundant, multi-beamed divine light). Πολύρρυτον ποταμόν is “the river that flows in many streams,” preserving the sense of overflowing, many-channeled outpouring.
- 3 ↩Τύπον is kept as “type” in the typological sense: the Virgin portrays/prefigures the baptismal font. Ζωγραφοῦσα is “paint/portray,” not merely “resemble.”
- 4 ↩Λουτήρ is the laver/washing basin; κρατήρ is the mixing bowl (not a generic “cup”). Κιρνῶν keeps the image of mixing a draught of gladness. Conscience is retained for συνείδησιν.
