The Virgin as Wall and Refuge
The Theotokos is invoked as a protective wall for all who seek her intercession.
You are a wall for virgins, O Virgin Mother of God, and for all who run to you.
The Pillar of Purity and Salvation
The hymn celebrates the Virgin's role in the Incarnation, her restoration of the human mind, and her status as the bride of the Lord.
For the Maker of heaven and earth fashioned you, O Undefiled One, dwelling in your womb and teaching all to cry out to you: Hail, pillar of virginity; hail, gate of salvation.✦1 Hail, pioneer of our spiritual remaking; hail, giver of divine goodness.2 Hail, for you have given new birth to those conceived in shame; hail, for you have set right those whose minds were plundered.3 Hail, you who put out of action the corrupter of minds; hail, you who bore the Sower of purity.4 Hail, bridal chamber of a seedless marriage; hail, you who join the faithful to the Lord. Hail, fair nurse of virgins; hail, bridesmaid of holy souls.5 Hail, Bride unwedded.✦

Notes
- 1 ↩Source reads σωτήριας; standard Byzantine form is σωτηρίας (of salvation). Sense rendered as salvation.
- 2 ↩νοητῆς ἀναπλάσεως: spiritual/intelligible re-creation of human nature, not mere psychological change. ἀρχηγέ rendered as pioneer/originator.
- 3 ↩συληθέντας τὸν νοῦν: from συλάω ‘to strip/plunder’—those robbed of sound mind/understanding. ἐνουθέτησας: admonished/instructed back to right mind.
- 4 ↩φθορέα τῶν φρενῶν: the devil as corrupter of the mind. σπορέα τῆς ἁγνείας: Christ as the Sower of purity/chastity. καταργοῦσα: Pauline ‘nullify/abolish’ force kept as ‘put out of action.’
- 5 ↩νυμφοστόλε: one who decks/escorts the bride; rendered ‘bridesmaid’ for natural modern English while keeping the nuptial office over souls.

Never lose the rhythm again
Chosen Portion delivers your morning, midday and night office to your phone — the Hours, without the bells.
Chosen Portion is a modern Book of Hours: it turns the fixed-hour structure this collection preserves into scheduled, tappable daily prayer on your phone.
- Three daily prayer moments scheduled around your real calendar, not a monastery's
- Psalms and historic prayers sequenced for you — no page-flipping or decision fatigue
- A visible streak of completed offices, so the rhythm compounds instead of collapsing
