The Light of Egypt and the New Exodus
The hymn celebrates the Theotokos as the fulfillment of Exodus imagery, bringing the light of Christ to dispel the darkness of idolatry.
Having shone in Egypt, you drove away the darkness of falsehood with the light of truth; for the idols of that land could not bear your power, O Savior, and fell, and those delivered from them cried out to the Mother of God: Hail, raising-up of human beings; hail, downfall of the demons.✦ Hail, you who trampled the delusion of deceit; hail, you who exposed the glory of the idols.1 Hail, sea that drowned the spiritual Pharaoh; hail, rock that gave drink to those who thirst for life.2 Hail, pillar of fire guiding those in darkness; hail, shelter of the world broader than the cloud.✦✦ Hail, food that succeeded the manna; hail, minister of holy delight.3 Hail, land of promise; hail, you from whom milk and honey flow.✦ Hail, unwedded Bride.
