The Light of Egypt and the New Exodus

The hymn celebrates the Theotokos as the fulfillment of Exodus imagery, bringing the light of Christ to dispel the darkness of idolatry.

Having shone in Egypt, you drove away the darkness of falsehood with the light of truth; for the idols of that land could not bear your power, O Savior, and fell, and those delivered from them cried out to the Mother of God: Hail, raising-up of human beings; hail, downfall of the demons. Hail, you who trampled the delusion of deceit; hail, you who exposed the glory of the idols.1 Hail, sea that drowned the spiritual Pharaoh; hail, rock that gave drink to those who thirst for life.2 Hail, pillar of fire guiding those in darkness; hail, shelter of the world broader than the cloud. Hail, food that succeeded the manna; hail, minister of holy delight.3 Hail, land of promise; hail, you from whom milk and honey flow. Hail, unwedded Bride.

Scripture echoes

  1. Matt.2.13-Matt.2.15Now after they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him." Matt.2.14 — So when Joseph got up, he took the child and his mother by night and withdrew to Egypt, Matt.2.15 — And he remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, 'Out of Egypt I called my son.'
  2. Exod.13.21-Exod.13.22And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Exod.13.22 — The pillar of cloud did not depart by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
  4. Exod.3.8So I have come down to deliver them from the hand of Egypt and to bring them up from that land to a good and broad land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

Notes

  1. 1Source reads τὴν ἀπάτης; the expected liturgical reading is τῆς ἀπάτης (‘the delusion of deceit’). Translation follows that intended sense.
  2. 2νοητόν (‘spiritual’/‘noetic’) marks Pharaoh as the typological enemy of the soul, not the historical king alone.
  3. 3τρυφῆς ἁγίας is spiritual delight/luxury, not worldly luxury; kept as ‘holy delight’.
