Afflictiones.
Surrender in Affliction
A prayer of humble submission to God's will, even in the midst of suffering and distress.
If I find favor in your eyes, O Lord, you will bring me back and show me both the Ark and the Tabernacle, and set me right in your service, making me joyful and glad in you. But if you say—and for Jesus' sake, please don't say it—'I have no pleasure in you,' then here I am; do with me whatever seems good in your eyes. Amen. O Lord, even though I'm afflicted on every side, please don't let me be in distress. Even if I'm lacking some of your comforts, let it not be all of them. Even if I'm chastened, don't let me be forsaken. Even if I'm cast down, don't let me perish. And even though my outward self is decaying and perishing, let my inward self be renewed daily, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. O Lord, whatever you lay upon me, I will remain silent and not open my mouth, because it's your doing and my deserving. Amen.
The Purpose of Trouble
Reflecting on how affliction serves to correct the soul and draw the believer back to God's law.
O Lord, you have dealt graciously with your servant according to your word. Before I was troubled, I went wrong, but now I have prayed that I might keep your Law. And it is good for me that I have been in trouble, so that I may learn to keep it better, in the mercies of Jesus Christ. Amen. I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right, and that you, in your faithfulness, have caused me to be troubled. O let your merciful kindness be my comfort, according to your word to your servant, even for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Cries for Mercy
A series of urgent petitions for divine intervention, acknowledging human frailty and the need for God's presence.
O Lord Almighty, O God of Israel, the soul in trouble and the spirit that is vexed cry out to you. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy, for you are merciful, and have pity on me, because I have sinned before you. For you endure forever, but unless you have mercy, I will utterly perish. Have mercy, therefore, even for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. O Lord, remember your promise that the poor will not always be forgotten, nor will the patient endurance of the meek perish forever. Amen. Lord, I will be glad and rejoice in your mercy, for you have considered my trouble and have known my soul in adversities. Amen. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble, and my eyes are consumed with heaviness; my soul and my body are weary. My strength fails me because of my sin, and my bones are worn out; I have become like a broken vessel, for I have heard the slander of the crowd, and fear surrounds me on every side. But my hope has been and is in you, O Lord; you are my God, save and deliver me for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Hope Amidst Despair
An internal dialogue of the soul, moving from deep heaviness to a renewed trust in God's protection.
Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, and why are you so troubled within me? O put your trust in God, that I may yet give him thanks for the help of his presence. My God, my soul is troubled within me; therefore, I will remember you. Amen. Awake, Lord; why are you sleeping? Awake, and don’t be absent from us forever; why do you hide your face and forget our misery and trouble? For our soul is brought low even to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. Arise, O Lord, and help us; deliver us for the sake of your mercies. Amen. Lord, I place my trust in you; don't let me ever be put to shame. Deliver me in your righteousness. Bow down your ear to me; hurry to deliver me. Be my strong rock and fortress, that you may save me. Also, be my guide and lead me for the sake of your name. Amen. O God, the enemy cries out so loudly, and the ungodly come on so fast that they threaten to overwhelm me; they intend to do me harm, so maliciously are they set against me. My heart is troubled within me, and the fear of death has fallen upon me. Fear, trembling, and a horrible dread have overwhelmed me. And I said, if only I had wings like a dove, so I could fly away and find rest; if only I could hurry to escape the stormy wind and tempest. But be my helper, and I will praise you, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. Amen. O Lord, be my help in trouble, for human help is worthless. Amen.
A Prayer for Daily Protection
A comprehensive petition for safety and guidance throughout the various dangers of life.
Gracious Father, the life of man is a warfare upon earth, and the dangers which assault us are diversely pointed against us. I humbly beseech you to be present with me in all the courses and passages of my life, especially in the services of my calling. Suffer no malice to be able to hurt me, no cunning to circumvent me, no violence to oppress me, and no falsehood to betray me. I ask you to prevent what I cannot foresee, to master what I cannot withstand, and to unmask and frustrate what I do not fear; so that, being delivered from all danger to both soul and body, I may praise you, my deliverer, and see how happy it is to make the Lord of Hosts my helper in the day of fear and trouble. Especially, O Lord, bless and protect me at this time from all dangers. May I glorify you for this deliverance as well, and be safe in the merits and the mercies of Jesus Christ, my only Lord and Savior. Amen.
Restoration and Delight
A final appeal for God's light to return, concluding with the recognition that God's law is the only source of true joy.
O Lord, you have fed me with the bread of affliction and given me plenty of tears to drink. I have become a source of strife to my neighbors, and my enemies laugh at me in scorn. But turn back to me, O God of Hosts; show me the light of your face, and I will be whole. Amen. Help me, O Lord my God; save me according to your mercy, and then the world will know that this is your hand, and that you, Lord, have done it. Amen, Lord Jesus. Amen. If my delight hadn't been in your Law, I would have perished in my trouble. O continue my delight. Amen.

But if thou say, (O for Iesus his sake say it not,) I have no pleasure in thee; behold, here I am, do with me as seemeth good in thine own eyes. Amen.
O Lord, though I be afflicted on every side, let me not be in distress: Though in want of some of thy comforts, yet not of all: Though I be chastned, yet let me not be forsaken: Though I be cast down, let me not perish: And though my outward man decay and perish, yet let my inward man be renewed daily, even for Iesus Christ his sake.
