The Royal Road of Zeal
The king is called to maintain the path of humility and emulate the righteous zeal of figures like Phinehas.
Keep to the royal road, king; don't turn aside from it, neither to the right nor to the left: for that is how you hold the path of humility and peace, so that you don't turn aside from zeal for what is right.✦ Hold fast, I say, King, to humility and peace; cry out to God with David, saying: 'Zeal for your house has consumed me.' The Lord truly fulfilled that saying through his own actions when he whipped the sellers and buyers and drove them out of the temple.✦ Phinehas, son of Eleazar, also earned the covenant of an everlasting priesthood from the Lord because of his righteous zeal.✦ For the Lord said to Moses: Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, because he was stirred with my zeal against them, so that I myself would not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal; therefore speak to him: Behold, I give him the peace of my covenant, and it will be both for him and for his offspring a covenant of everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God.✦
The King as Guardian of the House
As a member of Christ's body, the king must actively correct vice and protect the Church with the same zeal that consumed the Lord.
And so you too, most gentle king: let zeal for the Lord's house reasonably consume you — in that house of God where you also are a member of Christ. For the members ought to follow the head.✦ If you happen to see anything twisted in Christ's Church, work hard to set it right, and don't stop correcting it. If you see anyone in the house of God, which is the Church, rushing into luxury, into drunkenness, stop them, forbid it, put the fear of it in them — if zeal for the house of God consumes you.✦1 If you see someone puffed up with pride, or fierce with anger, or drunk on violence, or jealous of a brother out of spite, or inflamed with lust, or given over to greed for plunder, or violent with cruelty—restrain them all, threaten them all, and rein them all in with the utmost severity. Do everything you can for the role you bear, for the royal office you carry, for the Christian name you hold, and for the place of Christ you fill.2 Don't rest from gaining Christ, because you have been gained by Christ, and you fulfill in yourself: "Zeal for the house has consumed me."✦ For this zeal grants salvation, holds onto the faith, preserves chastity, loves what is right, and guards the Church of God with glorious vitality.

Tene, inquam, rex, humilitatem et pacem; et ad Deum cum David clama, et dic: Zelus domus tuae comedit me. Quam sententiam in actione sua Dominus veraciter complevit, quando vendentes et ementes de templo flagellatos eliminavit.
