Love-joy

The Grapes of Love and Joy

The narrator sees a window with a vine bearing grapes inscribed with J and C, initially interprets them as Joy and Charity, and is corrected by a bystander who identifies them as Jesus Christ.

The other day, as I glanced at a window, I saw a vine bearing grapes, with J and C fused into every bunch.1 Someone standing nearby asked what it meant. I (never reluctant to offer my judgment) said, "It seemed to me to be both the body and the letters of Joy and Charity."2 "Sir, you haven't missed it," the man replied. "It stands for Jesus Christ."

Read the original English

AS on a window late I cast mine eye, I saw a vine drop grapes with J and C Anneal’d on every bunch. One standing by Ask’d what it meant. I (who am never loth To spend my judgement) said, It seem’d to me To be the bodie and the letters both Of Joy and Charitie. Sir, you have not miss’d, The man reply’d; It figures JESUS CHRIST.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source 'Anneal’d' is glasswork language: letters heat-fused into the pane. Rendered as 'fused into' for plain modern sense.
  2. 2 ↩Kept 'Charity' (not 'love') because the rebus depends on the letter C matching Charity; also a theological-virtue sense of charitas.
