Trinitie Sunday
A Prayer to the Trinity
The speaker addresses the Triune God in confession and petition for grace.
Lord, who formed me out of mud, and redeemed me through your blood, and sanctified me to do good;✦✦✦ Purge all my sins committed so far: For I confess my heavy debt, and I will strive to sin no more.1 Enrich my heart, mouth, and hands within me with faith, with hope, with charity, that I may run, rise, and rest with you.

LOrd, who hast form'd me out of mud, And hast redeem'd me through thy bloud, And sanctifi'd me to do good;
Purge all my sinnes done heretofore: For I confesse my heavie score, And I will strive to sinne no more.
Enrich my heart, mouth, hands in me; With faith, with hope, with charitie; That I may runne, rise, rest with thee.
Scripture echoes
- ↩Gen.2.7 — Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
- ↩1Pet.1.18-1Pet.1.19;Eph.1.7 — knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things—silver or gold—from your futile way of life handed down from your fathers, 1Pet.1.19 — but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot Eph.1.7 — In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
- ↩Eph.2.10 — For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we would walk in them.
Notes
- 1 ↩Early modern 'score' means the tally or debt of sin; kept as 'score' for Herbert's ledger image of confession, rather than flattened to a generic 'burden'.
