The Meaning of the Name
The name 'Rosary' signifies a crown of roses offered to Jesus and Mary through prayer.
24. Ever since Blessed Alan de la Roche renewed this devotion, the public voice—which is the voice of God—has called it the Rosary, meaning a crown of roses. This means that every time you pray the Rosary properly, you place on the heads of Jesus and Mary a crown of one hundred fifty-three white roses and sixteen red roses from paradise, which will never lose their beauty or their radiance. The Blessed Virgin has approved and confirmed this name of Rosary, revealing to many that they were offering her as many pleasing roses as they would recite Hail Marys in her honor, and as many crowns of roses as they would say Rosaries.

25. Brother Alphonse Rodriguez of the Society of Jesus used to recite his Rosary with such fervor that he often saw a deep-red rose come out of his mouth at each Our Father, and at each Hail Mary a white one, equal in beauty and fragrance and differing only in color. The chronicles of Saint Francis tell of a young religious who had the praiseworthy custom of saying the crown of the Holy Virgin every day before his meal.1 One day, by some accident or other, he missed it; when the dinner bell had rung, he asked the superior for permission to recite it before going to table. With that permission he withdrew to his room; but since he was taking too long, the superior sent a religious to call him. This religious found him in his room, radiant with a heavenly light, and the Holy Virgin with two angels beside him; as he said each Hail Mary, a beautiful rose came out of his mouth. The angels took the roses one after another and placed them on the Holy Virgin's head, and she showed her pleasure at them. Two other religious sent to see what was delaying the others witnessed this whole mystery, and the Holy Virgin did not disappear until the crown had been recited (Antoine Boissieu, S.J. , The Christian Predestined by Devotion to the Holy Virgin).2
The Queen of Devotions
The Rosary is established as the preeminent devotion, likened to the queen of flowers.
So the Rosary is a great crown, and the chaplet is a little hat of flowers—or a small crown of heavenly roses—that one places on the head of Jesus and of Mary. The rose is the queen of flowers; in the same way, the Rosary is the rose and the first of all devotions.

Depuis que le bienheureux Alain de la Roche a renouvelé cette dévotion, la voix publique, qui est la voix de Dieu, lui a donné le nom de Rosaire qui signifie couronne de roses; c'est-à-dire que toutes les fois que l'on dit comme il faut son Rosaire, on met sur la tête de Jésus et de Marie une couronne composée de cent-cinquante-trois roses blanches et de seize roses rouges du paradis, lesquelles ne perdront jamais ni leur beauté ni leur éclat. La Sainte Vierge a approuvé et confirmé ce nom de Rosaire, révélant à plusieurs qu'ils lui présentaient autant d'agréables roses qu'ils réciteront d'Ave Maria en son honneur et autant de couronnes de roses qu'ils diront de Rosaires.

Ce religieux le trouva dans sa chambre, tout éclatant d'une céleste lumière, et la Sainte Vierge avec deux anges auprès de lui; à mesure qu'il disait un Ave Maria, une belle rose sortait de sa bouche, les anges prenaient les roses l'une après l'autre et les mettaient sur la tête de la Sainte Vierge qui en témoignait de l'agrément. Le Rosaire est donc une grande couronne et le chapelet est un petit chapeau de fleurs ou petite couronne de roses célestes qu'on met sur la tête de Jésus et de Marie. La rose est la reine des fleurs, de même le Rosaire est la rose et la première des dévotions.
