The Danger of Opposing the Rosary
The author warns against the grave spiritual peril of those who hinder the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and discourage others from this essential devotion.
30. But let's now consider how unjust it is to hinder the progress of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, and what punishments God has used against several wretched people who despised that confraternity and tried to destroy it. Although the devotion of the Holy Rosary has been authorized from heaven by many wonders and approved by the Church through many papal bulls, there are far too many freethinkers, impious people, and so-called free spirits of the age who try to run down the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary or at least keep the faithful away from it.1 It's easy to see that their tongues are infected with the venom of hell and that they are driven by the evil spirit; for no one can disapprove of the devotion of the Holy Rosary without also condemning what is most devout in the Christian religion: the Lord's Prayer, the Angelic Salutation, and the mysteries of the life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and his holy Mother.2 These freethinkers, who can't stand people praying the Rosary, often fall, without realizing it, into the condemned thinking of heretics who abhor the beads and the Rosary.3 To abhor confraternities is to draw away from God and from true piety, since Jesus Christ assures us that he is present in the midst of those who are gathered in his name. It's not being a good Catholic to neglect so many and such great indulgences as the Church grants to confraternities. Finally, to dissuade the faithful from belonging to the Holy Rosary is to be an enemy of the salvation of souls, since through this means they leave the side of sin to embrace piety.4 If Saint Bonaventure was right that anyone who neglects the Blessed Virgin will die in their sin and be damned—"Whoever neglects her will die in his sins"—then what punishments must await those who turn others away from devotion to her?5

Mais, voyons maintenant quelle injustice c'est d'empêcher le progrès de la confrérie du saint Rosaire et quels sont les châtiments dont Dieu a puni plusieurs malheureux qui ont méprisé et voulu détruire la confrérie du saint Rosaire. Quoique la dévotion du saint Rosaire ait été autorisée du ciel par plusieurs prodiges et qu'elle soit approuvée de l'Église par plusieurs bulles des papes, il ne se trouve que trop de libertins, d'impies et d'esprits forts du temps, qui tâchent ou de décrier la confrérie du saint Rosaire, ou d'en éloigner du moins les fidèles. Il est aisé de connaître que leurs langues sont infectées du venin de l'enfer et qu'ils sont poussés par l'esprit malin; car nul ne peut désapprouver la dévotion du saint Rosaire, qu'il ne condamne ce qu'il y a de plus pieux dans la religion chrétienne, savoir: l'Oraison dominicale, la Salutation angélique, les mystères de la vie, de la mort et de la gloire de Jésus-Christ et de sa sainte Mère. Ces esprits forts, qui ne peuvent souffrir qu'on dise le Rosaire, souvent tombent, sans y penser, dans le sens réprouvé des hérétiques qui ont en horreur le chapelet et le Rosaire. C'est s'éloigner de Dieu et de la vraie piété que d'abhorrer les confréries, puisque Jésus-Christ nous assure qu'il se trouve au milieu de ceux qui sont assemblés en son nom. Ce n'est pas être bon catholique que de négliger tant et de si grandes indulgences que l'Église accorde aux confréries. Enfin c'est être ennemi du salut des âmes, de dissuader les fidèles d'être du saint Rosaire, puisque, par ce moyen, ils quittent le parti du péché pour embrasser la piété.
Si saint Bonaventure a eu raison de dire que celui-là mourra en son péché et sera damné qui aura négligé la Sainte Vierge: Qui negligerit illam morietur in peccatis suis, quels châtiments doivent attendre ceux qui détournent les autres de sa dévotion!
