Chapter 84JulianShowings.1.84

Charite is this light which is not so litil but that it is nedefull with travel to deserven endles worshipfull thanke of God. For feith and hope leden us to charite which is in three manners. Eighty-fourth chapter.

The Light of Charity

Charity is a measured light from God's wisdom, neither blinding nor hidden, that enables meritorious living and leads through faith and hope to the fullness of charity at the end.

The light is charity, and the measuring of this light is done for our benefit by the wisdom of God.1 For the light is neither so great that we can see our bliss in full daylight, nor is it hidden from us, but it is such a light that in it we may live meritoriously with toil, deserving God's endless honor.2 And this was seen in the sixth showing, where He said, I thank you for your service and for your toil.3 Thus charity keeps us in faith and hope, and hope leads us into charity. And at the end, all will be charity.

Three Manners of Charity

Julian receives three understandings of charity: uncreated charity which is God, created charity which is our soul in God, and given charity which is virtue and the gracious gift of loving God and all things in God.

I had three kinds of understanding in this light, charity. The first is uncreated charity.4 The second is created charity.5 The third is given charity. Uncreated charity is God.✦✦ Created charity is our soul in God. Given charity is virtue. And that is a gracious gift of working in which we love God for Himself and ourselves in God, and what God loves, for God.6

Read the original Middle English

The light is charite, and the mesuring of this light is don to us profitably by the wisdam of God. For neyther the light is so large that we may seen our blis full day, ne it is sperid fro us, but it is suich a light in which we may liven medefully with travel deservand the endless worship of God. And this was seen in the sixth shewing where He seid, I thanke the of thi service and of thi travell. Thus charite kepith us in feith and in hope, and hope ledith us in charite. And at the end, al shall be charite.

I had three manner of understonding in this light, charite. The first is chartite onmade. The second is charite made. The third is charite goven. Charite onmade is God. Charite made is our soule in God. Charite goven is vertue. And that is a gracious geft of werking in which we loven God for Himselfe and ourselves in God, and that God lovith, for God.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩1John.4.8 — The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
  2. ↩1John.4.16 — And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩charite: rendered charity as the theological virtue (faith–hope–charity), not almsgiving; love remains an allowed alternate under lexeme policy.
  2. 2 ↩travel: Middle English travail (toil/labor), not journeying; medefully: meritoriously, in a way that earns mede (reward); sperid: shut/barred; endless worship of God: in Julian's idiom here, the endless honor/thanks God bestows (cf. chapter title worshipfull thanke of God), not only our worship offered to God.
  3. 3 ↩travell: again travail/toil; Christ's thanks for service and labor, echoing the meritorious travail of s2. Direct speech kept uncontracted for solemn address.
  4. 4 ↩Source spelling chartite taken as charite (charity). onmade rendered as uncreated (unmade / not made).
  5. 5 ↩made rendered as created, to keep Julian's contrast with onmade (uncreated).
  6. 6 ↩Parsed as 'and what God loves, for God' (for God's sake)—the usual reading of Julian's threefold love in given charity.
