Regula, caput VIII

Speaking Through the Screen

Christ sets the days and manner in which the nuns may speak to laypeople through the screen.

Christ determines here on which days and in what manner the nuns may speak to laypeople through the screen. .

Designated Times at the Windows

The nuns may speak with secular people from the ninth hour until evening, but only on Sundays and great feasts, sitting at the designated windows without going out.

At these times, however, the nuns can speak with secular people — namely, from the ninth hour all the way to evening — but only on Sundays and on the great feasts of the saints; they are not to go out, but may sit at the designated windows.

The Enclosure Without Return

Once a woman enters the monastery, she will never be permitted to leave its enclosure.

For after her entry, no one will be permitted to leave the monastery enclosure.

The Hidden Window and the Greater Reward

A nun may open a window to be seen by parents or respectable friends, but a richer reward is promised to her if she does not.

If, perhaps, someone wishes to be seen by parents or by dear, respectable friends, she may open a window; but if she does not open the window, a richer reward is promised to her in the future.

Read the original Latin

Christus determinat hic, quibus diebus et qualiter moniales possint loqui ad cratem personis secularibus. .

"Hiis autem temporibus moniales secularibus loqui possunt, scilicet a nona vsque ad vesperas et hoc tantum dominicis diebus et magnis festis sanctorum, non tamen exeundo sed ad fenestras deputatas sedendo. Nulli enim post introitum suum licebit de monasterii claustris exire. Si qua forte a parentibus vel amicis honestis caris videri desiderat, aperire potest fenestram; si autem non aperit fenestram, eo copiosior merces ei repromittitur in futuro."
