Chapter 37PsAug.1.37

Oratio ad sanctam Trinitatem.

The Soul's Trinitarian Invocation

The soul opens with a grand doxological address to the Holy Trinity, praising the one God in three Persons and asking that the gates of justice be opened.

O three co-equal and co-eternal Persons, one true God, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, who alone dwell in eternity and in inaccessible light; who founded the earth by your power, and govern the world with wisdom; holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, terrible and mighty, just and merciful, wonderful, praiseworthy, most lovable; one God, three Persons in one essence, power, wisdom, and goodness, one and undivided Trinity: open to me as I cry out the gates of justice, and having entered them I will give praise to the Lord.

The Beggar Knocking at God's Door

The soul humbly presents itself as a beggar knocking at the Father's door, pleading that Christ's promise — 'Knock and it will be opened' — be fulfilled.

Look — at your door, most high Father of the household, a beggar knocks. Command it to be opened to the one who knocks — you who said, 'Knock and it will be opened to you' (Matt. 7, 7).

Tears and Groaning Before the Father

The soul offers its deep longings and tears as its knock upon the Father's door, trusting that every desire and groan is fully known to God.

They knock at your door, most merciful Father — the longings of my heart's deep cries, and the shouts of my eyes' tears. Before you is every desire of mine, and my groaning is not hidden from you (Ps. 37, 10).

Do Not Turn Your Face Away

The soul begs the Lord not to turn away in anger, pleading for the restoration of the divine face and favor.

And you, Lord, do not turn your face away from me any longer, nor turn aside in anger from your servant (Ps. XXVI, 9).

Rescue from the Depths of Misery

The Father of mercies is implored to hear the orphan's wailing and stretch out a saving hand to draw the soul from the pit of misery.

Father of mercies, hear the wailing of your orphan, and stretch out your hand — your best help — so that it may draw me from the depths of the waters, and from the pit of misery, and from the mire of the dregs, lest I perish while the mercy of your eyes looks on, while the tenderness of your heart gazes down (Ps.

The Longing to See God's Face

The soul expresses its deepest desire: to come before the Lord, behold the riches of His kingdom, gaze upon His face, and be renewed in strength like the eagle.

XXXIX, 3); but let me come to you, Lord my God, so that I may see the riches of your kingdom, and gaze upon your face always, and speak praise to your holy name, Lord — you who work wonders, who make my heart joyful through the memory of you, who illuminate my youth and do not despise my old age, but make all my bones rejoice, and make my gray hairs grow young again like the eagle's.

Closing Doxology to the Trinity

The prayer concludes with a sweeping ascription of all glory, praise, power, and blessedness to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

All glory, all praise, all virtue, all power, all magnificence, all blessedness, all clemency — be to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

XXXVII, 10). Et tu, Domine, non avertas faciem tuam amplius a me, nec declines in ira a servo tuo (Psal.

XXVI, 9). Amen
