Chapter 66PrecesPriv.1.66

Preces Quotidianae

Confession and Mercy

The prayer opens with a confession of sin, invoking God's name and appealing to His mercy through Christ the Advocate.

because your name has been invoked over your servant.✦ (In many things we all stumble; Jas.✦1 2.✦ 2.) Lord, let your mercy triumph over your judgment in our offenses.✦ If I say that I have no sin, I deceive myself, and the truth is not in me.✦2 But I confess my many and heavy sins, and you are faithful and just, Lord, so that you may forgive my sins as I confess them.✦ And for this I also have an Advocate before you, with you—1 John.✦3

God's Unfailing Mercy

The meditation begins with a scriptural citation (1 John 2:1–2), then poses a series of rhetorical questions about God's enduring mercy, ending with a declaration of trust in the Most High's change.

ii.✦4 1.✦ your only-begotten Son, the Righteous One: may He Himself be the propitiation for my sins,✦ He is also for the whole world.✦5 Will he cast off forever?6 the Lord—or will he not be favorable again? Or will he cut off his mercy forever? Has he brought his word to an end from generation to generation?7 Or will God forget to show mercy? Or will he hold back his mercies in his anger? And I said, "Now I have begun."8 This is the change of the right hand of the Most High.9

Putting Away Sin

A concluding list of sins to be renounced, including the sin that surrounds, all impurity, wickedness, fleshly desires, and lust of the eyes.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source reads ommes; translated as omnes (all), the required reading of James 3:2.
  2. 2 ↩Source begins 81 dixero; read as Si dixero (If I say), matching 1 John 1:8 adapted to the singular.
  3. 3 ↩ad te apud te is slightly redundant; rendered as before you, with you, awaiting the next section's identification of the Advocate as the only-begotten Son, the Righteous One (1 John 2:1).
  4. 4 ↩Source prints '11.' immediately after '1 Jo.'; treated as the chapter numeral ii. (1 John 2), the usual OCR/print confusion of roman ii with arabic 11.
  5. 5 ↩Latin is elliptical (qui est pro totius etiam mundi), echoing 1 John 2:2 without restating 'peccatis'; sense is that He is propitiation for the whole world as well, not for the speaker alone.
  6. 6 ↩Source 'zeternum' corrected as 'aeternum' (aeternum / æternum OCR corruption).
  7. 7 ↩'Consummavit verbum' in this psalm series is taken as finishing/ending the covenant word or promise (not merely 'completing a sentence').
  8. 8 ↩Source reads 'Nune copi'; most plausible intended reading is 'Nunc coepi' (Vulg. Ps 76:11), confirmed by the next section's 'Hac mutatio dextere Exeelsi' (= Haec mutatio dexterae Excelsi).
  9. 9 ↩Source text appears corrupt/OCR-damaged: 'Hac mutatio dextere Exeelsi.' Read as Vulgate Ps 76:11 'Haec mutatio dexterae Excelsi,' continuing the prior 'Et dixi: Nunc coepi.'
  10. 10 ↩The supplied Latin is not readable as continuous Latin (or Greek): mixed Latin fragments, Greek characters, and non-words. No plausible normalized reading can be reconstructed from this section alone without inventing sense.
  11. 11 ↩Fragment 'xi d.' has no recoverable Latin sense in context; likely truncated or OCR-damaged remains of a longer line.
  12. 12 ↩Reading source 'cireumstans' as intended 'circumstans' (standing around / surrounding).
  13. 13 ↩Standalone genitive carnis (of flesh/the flesh). Neighboring sections point to a renunciation list (cf. Jac. 1 superfluity of wickedness; then lust of the eyes), so this is likely the fragment of a fuller phrase such as concupiscentia carnis rather than a free-standing clause.
  14. 14 ↩The numeral “1” in the Latin is treated as a note or reference marker (likely toward 1 John 2:16), not as part of the sentence wording.
