Chapter 4PrecesPriv.1.4

Preces Quotidianae

Opening Confession and Cry for Mercy

The soul confesses its sin and pleads for mercy, echoing the penitential spirit of the Psalms.

The human mind will acknowledge you, and the remnants of thought will keep a feast day in your honor.✦1 According to.2 I have sinned. I confess. Have mercy, through and for the sake of.3 As.4

Resolution and Weakness

The worshipper resolves to amend, acknowledges weakness, and calls upon Jesus for help.

I resolve. I am weak. Bring help, Jesus.5

Prayer for Faith and Hope

A series of petitions for increased faith and hope, grounded in scriptural allusions and culminating in a typographic pause.

in. I believe, Lord; help my unbelief.✦6 Increase the little faith I have.✦ And now, what is my hope? Is it not you?✦7 And all that I am is with you.✦8 —

Petitions for Illumination and Obedience

The worshipper asks for opened eyes, an inclined heart, and directed steps to walk in God's commandments.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩confitebitur: in psalm diction often 'confess/acknowledge' with the force of praise; rendered 'confess' to keep the Latin surface while remaining plain English.
  2. 2 ↩Bare secundum. with no complement; could be adverbial 'accordingly' or a truncated rubric 'according to…'.
  3. 3 ↩Normalized 'Miserere4' treated as Miserere plus a non-Latin numeral/reference mark, not as part of the prayer wording.
  4. 4 ↩Only sicut is clearly Latin; leading 'i' is unintelligible in isolation (possible OCR/artifact, numeral, or broken word).
  5. 5 ↩Source reads 'Fer opem | ies'. Translated as 'Fer opem, Iesu' (Bring help, Jesus); the trailing fragment looks like a truncated vocative of Jesus.
  6. 6 ↩Latin has infidelitatem ('unbelief' / 'faithlessness'); the familiar Mark 9:24 form uses incredulitatem. Rendered as 'unbelief' to keep the prayer's force without inventing the Gospel wording.
  7. 7 ↩Normalized quze as quae ('what'). The Greek ἢ between the clauses looks like a typesetting/OCR intrusion; sense taken as two questions, matching the psalm cadence continued in s5.
  8. 8 ↩substantia mea: psalmic 'my substance' / the whole of my being. Rendered 'all that I am' for modern readability while keeping the total self-offering sense.
  9. 9 ↩Source `intelügam` is treated as corrupt OCR for `intelligam` (1sg present subjunctive of intelligo), continuing the prior petition Revela oculos meos.
  10. 10 ↩Source `Jbid` is treated as OCR for `Ibid.` (ibidem), a citation marker pointing back to the same scriptural source as the preceding petition.
  11. 11 ↩Printer's citation closer only. If this continues (Ibid. …], 96 may be a verse number (or OCR for 36, the usual verse for Inclina cor meum); left as printed and flagged for later reference resolution.
  12. 12 ↩Source reading 'dihgam' is almost certainly corrupt OCR for 'diligam' (subjunctive of diligo), continuing the prayer-chain pattern of the neighboring petitions (intelligam … diligam … incedam).
  13. 13 ↩Citation opener '(4bid.' is treated as garbled '(Ibid.' (same reference source as the previous citation).
  14. 14 ↩Source is only the fragment “l.”; likely a structural marker, letter-heading, or extraction artifact, not continuous prayer text. Left as a minimal surface form pending source review.
  15. 15 ↩Source is only the numeral “3.”; likely a section or list number rather than prose to translate.
  16. 16 ↩Noster is elliptical; in Preces Privatae intercession headings it typically means our own church/people. Rendered as a standing heading, not expanded.
