Preces Quotidianae

Virtues for Daily Prayer

The opening petitions ask for chastity, temperance, contentment, kindness, truth, integrity, right thinking, and final perseverance.

Chastity and temperance, a contented mind and kindness, truth and integrity, right thinking, Perseverance to the end.

The Father and the Son

This long profession moves from God the Creator through the incarnation, passion, death, descent, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, ending with his coming to judgment.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩John.1.14 — And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
  2. ↩Rom.10.9;Phil.2.11;1Cor.8.6 — If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Phil.2.11 — and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 1Cor.8.6 — yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
  3. ↩Luke.1.35;Matt.1.18 — And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore also the one to be born will be called Son of God." Matt.1.18 — Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened in this way: after his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
  4. ↩Mark.16.19;Acts.1.9-Acts.1.11;Luke.24.51 — So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Acts.1.9 — And after he said these things, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. Acts.1.10 — And as they were looking intently into the sky as he was going, behold, two men stood beside them in white garments. Acts.1.11 — Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way you saw him go into heaven. Luke.24.51 — And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.
  5. ↩Acts.1.11 — Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way you saw him go into heaven.
  6. ↩2Tim.4.1;Acts.10.42 — I charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is about to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: Acts.10.42 — And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source ends with opaque 'l.' (likely truncation or line marker). 'Coeli' is almost certainly the genitive caeli from the creed's Creatorem caeli et terrae, mis-segmented before Patrem/Creatorem in the next sentence. Rendered as 'of heaven' on the words present; full creed sense is Creator of heaven and earth across s1–s2.
  2. 2 ↩Source 'Terrz' (with leading quote mark) corrected as terrae 'of the earth'. Standard creed pairing is caeli et terrae; caeli appears misplaced in s1.
  3. 3 ↩Bare numeral; almost certainly the printed article number for the second article of the Creed (belief in Jesus Christ), not prose content.
  4. 4 ↩Continues the Creed line begun in the previous section ('And in Jesus Christ, His only-begotten Son'); not a freestanding sentence.
  5. 5 ↩Normalized reading takes 'Conceeptum' as a misspelling of Conceptum (standard creed wording).
  6. 6 ↩Latin Inferos is the lower regions / realm of the dead (creedal formula), not Gehenna. Traditional English keeps 'hell'; some modern creeds prefer 'to the dead.'
  7. 7 ↩Supplied Latin is only 'Qui 4'. 'Qui' is rendered as the relative/pronominal 'Who'; the bare numeral '4' is retained as written because it is almost certainly a structural marker absorbed into the sentence, not recoverable lexical content.
  8. 8 ↩Latin has Judicatum (odd form here); rendered in the creedal purpose sense 'to judge,' parallel to judicare / judicaturus vivos et mortuos.
  9. 9 ↩Source Eeclesiam is an obvious OCR/print corruption of Ecclesiam; translated as 'the Church.'
