The Evening Hymn (Phos Hilaron)
The ancient hymn 'O joyful Light' praising the Trinity at evening, declaring Christ worthy of praise, and concluding that the world glorifies Him.
Evening Hymn. O joyful Light of the holy glory of the immortal Father—heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ—when we have come to the setting of the sun and see the evening light, we praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit of God.1 You are worthy at all times to be celebrated with holy voices, Son of God, Giver of life,2 That is why the world glorifies You.

Quoniam Tu solus sanctus, Tu solus Dominus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu,
in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.
HYMNUS VESPERTINUS.
LUMEN hilare sancte glorie Immortalis Patris, coelestis, sancti, beati, Jesu Christe ; quum ad solis occasum pervenerimus, lumen cernentes vespertinum, laudamus Patrem, Filium, et Sanctum Spiritum Dei. Dignus es in tempore quovis sanctis vocibus celebrari, Fili Dei, vitz dator,
Quapropter Te mundus glorificat.
Scripture echoes
- ↩Luke.2.14 — Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
Notes
- 1 ↩LUMEN hilare is the Latin of the ancient evening hymn Phos Hilaron (Φῶς ἱλαρόν); hilare = joyful/glad. sancte glorie is orthographic for sanctae gloriae ('of holy glory'). coelestis, sancti, beati are taken with Jesu Christe as traditional epithets.
- 2 ↩Source reading vitz is almost certainly vitae (vitae dator = 'giver of life'); translated on that corrected sense. Sentence ends mid-clause as in the source; next section continues Quapropter Te mundus glorificat.
