Preces Quotidianae

Prayer for the Word and Inner Illumination

A petition for the Word of the Father, the touching and enlightening of the heart, with a scriptural citation.

Give me the Word, the Word of the Father.✦ Touch my heart. Enlighten the senses of my heart.✦ (Eph. i. 8.]✦1

Prayer for Holy Speech

A series of petitions for opened lips, purified speech, a well-taught tongue, and the filling of the mouth with God's praise.

Open my lips, and fill them with Your praises. Lord, be in my spirit and in my mouth. In my mouth, so that I may proclaim Your oracles rightly and worthily, by the sanctifying power of Your thrice-holy Spirit.2 O You, live coal of twofold nature, who with the tongs touched the prophet's lips and took away his sins: touch my lips, for I am a sinner, and cleanse me from every stain, and make me fit to announce Your oracles.3 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim Your praise. Lord, O Lord, give me a well-taught tongue, so that I may know what word I ought to speak; and if there is any word for needed edification, that You may give grace to those who hear.4 May words be given to me when I open my mouth. I open my mouth wide, Lord; You fill it.

Prayer at the Entrance of the Temple

A prayer of approach to God's house, drawing near in mercy, worshiping in fear, and lifting hands in supplication.

At the entrance of the Temple. In the abundance of Your mercy I will draw near to Your house.✦5 I will worship toward Your holy Temple in the fear of You.✦ Hear, Lord, the voice of my prayer in the time when I pray to You and lift up my hands toward Your holy Temple.✦6 I will receive, Lord, Your mercy✦7

Read the original Latin

Da mihi Verbum, Verbum Patris.

Tange mihi cor.

Ilumina sensus cordis. (Eph. i. 8.]

Detur mihi sermo in apertione oris.

Dilato os meum, Domine: Tu imple.

Ad Templi ingressum. Ego in multtudine misericordiw Tu: accedam ad domum Tuam. Adorabo ad sanctum Tuum Templum in timore Tui. Exaudi, Domine, vocem orationis mez in tempore quo precor ad Te, et attollo manus meas ad sanctum Tuum Templum.

Suscipiam, Domine, misericordiam (Tuam

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source cites Eph. i. 8, while the petition wording more nearly matches the 'enlightened eyes/senses of the heart' tradition usually linked with Eph 1:18; leave for Moses resolution.
  2. 2 ↩Source reads 'Spintus'; translated as intended 'Spiritus' (Spirit).
  3. 3 ↩Source reads 'pruna geminz nature'; translated on the most plausible correction 'pruna geminae naturae' (live coal of twofold nature), a traditional Christological reading of the coal in Isaiah 6.
  4. 4 ↩Latin has 'sedificationem', almost certainly a corruption of 'aedificationem' (edification); translation follows that intended sense.
  5. 5 ↩Normalized Latin appears corrupt: multtudine→multitudine, misericordiw→misericordiae, and Tu: almost certainly Tuae (Ego in multitudine misericordiae Tuae). Translated from that corrected reading (cf. Ps 5:8 Vulgate).
  6. 6 ↩mez is almost certainly meae (vocem orationis meae). et taken as joining precor and attollo under the same relative time-clause (quo), matching the parallel dum ... dum structure of the psalm tradition.
  7. 7 ↩Source is truncated/corrupt: ends mid-phrase with an unmatched parenthesis after misericordiam (Tuam. Sense restored as the incomplete clause Suscipiam, Domine, misericordiam Tuam; neighboring section PrecesPriv.1.220.1 continues with in medio domus Tuae, suggesting the full petition spans the section break.
