Preces Quotidianae

Gifts of Compunction and Remembrance

The soul thanks God for preserving a tender heart, the memory of last things, and the awareness of past sin.

You who did not allow my heart to be hardened, but left me the heart's compunction, 46.1 2. 37.✦ the memory of the last things, Deut.✦2 32. 29.✦ the conscience of past sin, Heb.3 10.

The Door of Hope and the Keys

God opens the door of hope to the confessing soul through the power of the keys and the mysteries.

2.✦ You who opened the door of hope to me, as I confess and ask, by the power of the mysteries and✦4 of the keys, ἘΠ 19.✦5 Matt.6 18.7 39. 6. 70.

Spared from the Weaver's Cut

God has not cut off life prematurely but has spared the weaver's thread from morning to evening.

20. 95. Matt.✦ 16. 19. You who have not cut off my life as a weaver does, while I was still beginning to weave it; nor have you taken me away from morning until evening, Is.✦8 38.✦ 12.

Kept in Life and Steadfast

God has not taken the soul in the midst of days but has kept it in life and prevented its feet from slipping.

Nor have you taken me away in the middle of my days. Ps.✦ 101. 94.9 But you have kept my soul in life, and you have not let my feet slip. Ps.✦ 66. 8.✦10

Closing Thanksgiving

The prayer concludes with a general thanksgiving for all these mercies.

For all these things, etc.11

  4. ↩Heb.10.2 — Otherwise, they would have ceased being offered, because the worshipers, having been cleansed once for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins.
  5. ↩Hos.2.15 — And I will punish her for the days of the Baals, to whom she burned incense, and she put on her ring and her jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot me, declares the LORD.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Trailing «46. looks like a fragmented scripture tag, not part of the prayer clause; left as residual citation material.
  2. 2 ↩Source Dewf. read as Deut. (Deuteronomy), matching the following xxxii. 29. citation and the novissima/latter-end sense.
  3. 3 ↩prcecedentis corrected as praecedentis (preceding/past); eb. read as Heb. (Hebrews), matching the following x. and the conscience-of-sin wording in Hebrews 10.
  4. 4 ↩Source shows OCR debris ἃ and a mid-phrase break (et ?); the construction continues in the next sentence as clavium potestate. ἃ is dropped as non-Latin noise. confitenti et roganti taken as datives in apposition with mihi.
  5. 5 ↩Completes prior ex mysteriorum et clavium potestate: by the power of the mysteries and of the keys. Trailing ἘΠ 19. is an unresolved citation chip (Greek capitals likely OCR corruption of a book label).
  6. 6 ↩Source Maf/. read as Matt. (Matthew), matching neighboring Matt. xvi. 19. and the keys context.
  7. 7 ↩Source xvin. treated as OCR of xviii. (18), a common keys/binding-and-loosing chapter (Matt. 18); uncertain.
  8. 8 ↩Normalized clear OCR/print errors: prescidisti → praecidisti; abstulistài → abstulisti; terminal '4s.' read as 'Is.' (Isaiah), matching the following xxxviii. 12 and Isaiah 38:12.
  9. 9 ↩Printed '94.' is an unlikely verse for Psalm 101 (Vulgate Ps 101 ends near v. 29). The quoted prayer language tracks Ps 101:24; '94.' may be OCR/print corruption of '24.'
  10. 10 ↩Printed verse '8.' with Ps lxvi may point to Ps 66:8–9 (English) / Vulgate Ps 65:8–9; the Latin of s4 more tightly matches the 'kept my soul in life / feet not moved' half usually numbered as v. 9.
  11. 11 ↩Source reading 'Pro hisee omnibus, ete.' is almost certainly corrupt; treated as 'Pro hisce omnibus, etc.' (For all these things, etc.), a common summary formula after the preceding psalm thanksgivings.
