Preces Quotidianae

A Plea for Spotlessness

Begins the daily devotion by asking God to guard the soul and keep us blameless before his glory.

Guard our souls, I ask you, Lord. Keep us free from sin and present us spotless in the sight of your glory. Jude1 24.

Prayer for This Day

Asks God to watch over all coming and going and to grant favor before others throughout the day.

On this day. Watch over my going out and my coming in, from this time on and forever.✦2 Guide your servant today, and show him mercy before those he meets.3

Psalms of Succor

Lifts up the daily versicle and verses from Psalms 70 and 86, asking for help, mercy, and a saving sign.

O God, come to my help; Lord, hurry to help me. Ps.✦ 70.4 1. Look on me and have mercy on me; give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your handmaid.5 Ps. 86.6 16. Give me a sign of your favor, so I won't be put to shame in front of those who hate me; for you, Lord, have helped me.7 And you have comforted me. Verse.8 17.

  1. ↩Ps.121.8;Ps.122.8 — The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Ps.122.8 — For the sake of my brothers and my companions, I will now speak peace to you.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Normalized source reads 'gloriz; tus, Jud.'; treated as corrupt OCR for 'gloriae tuae, Jud.' (Jude), matching the petition form of Jude 24.
  2. 2 ↩Normalized OCR forms nune→nunc and szculum→saeculum; sense is the familiar psalm petition.
  3. 3 ↩ante occurrentes taken as those he will encounter in the day; could also be read as those who come to meet him.
  4. 4 ↩Roman numeral LXX is a psalm number continuing the Ps. citation from the previous sentence; Hebrew 70 / Vulgate 69 for the versicle above.
  5. 5 ↩Normalized OCR ancille tuz→ancillae tuae. Source reads imperium (power/authority); common Vulgate for this verse has virtutem.
  6. 6 ↩lxxxwvi almost certainly OCR for lxxxvi (86), matching Hebrew Psalm 86 for the preceding petition; Vulgate numbering would be 85.
  7. 7 ↩Source 'Fae' is almost certainly a misprint or OCR corruption of 'Fac' (make/give); translation follows that corrected reading.
  8. 8 ↩Latin rubrical abbreviation 'Vers.' = Versus (Verse), marking the next versicle/verse in the daily-prayer cycle.
  9. 9 ↩Source line is corrupt OCR of Greek, not Latin. Read as Εὐχαὶ καθημεριναί (Daily Prayers): ETXAI ≈ ΕΥΧΑΙ; KAOGHMEPINAT ≈ ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΑΙ.
  10. 10 ↩Source line is corrupted mixed Greek/Latin OCR (ΤΗΣ IPOTHrE"'-HMEPZASZ). Restored as Greek genitive phrase Τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας, 'of the first day,' fitting chapter Preces Quotidianae and the preceding daily-prayers heading.
