Preces Quotidianae

Hosanna on Earth

A brief acclamation of praise, echoing the psalmist's cry of 'Hosanna'.

Hosanna on earth,✦

Prayer for Yearly Blessing

Petitions for God's kindness and provision, drawing on scriptural promises of blessing and sustenance.

Remember, Lord, to crown the year with your kindness.✦ The eyes of all hope in you; you give them their food at the right time. You open your hand and fill every living creature with blessing. And grant also to us, Lord, of the blessing of heaven and of the dew from above; of the blessing of the springs of the deep that lies beneath; the circuits of the sun and the courses of the moon; from the heights of the eastern mountains and the ancient hills; from the fruits of the earth and its fullness. — Deut.12 33.3 13–16.4

Petition for Earthly Goods

A prayer for material and civic prosperity, including good harvests, governance, and the blessing of children.

A plentiful yield for the year, mild weather, glad crops and abundance of fruit, a vigorous bodily constitution and peaceful times; good rulers who govern well; just laws, right counsel, incorrupt judges; the people's obedience, strength for the magistrates, abundance of resources; offspring many in conception, easy in birth, and honorable in form and character,5 strong in growth, properly raised.6

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Ps.118.25-Ps.118.26 — Save us now, O LORD; O LORD, grant us success now. Ps.118.26 — Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD; and we bless you from the house of the LORD.
  2. ↩Ps.65.12;Ps.66.11 — You have crowned the year of your goodness, and your paths drip with abundance. Ps.66.11 — You brought us into the net; you laid a heavy burden on our backs.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Normalized OCR/print corruptions: cceli→caeli, Lun:e→Lunae, terrze→terrae, Devt.→Deut. (citation tag).
  2. 2 ↩Coitus Lunae is taken in the astronomical sense (courses/conjunctions of the moon), not a sexual sense; Conversiones Solis as the sun’s circuits/turnings.
  3. 3 ↩Printed reference fragment (chapter number), almost certainly Deuteronomy 33 with the following verse range.
  4. 4 ↩Verse range belonging with the preceding chapter marker (Deut. 33:13–16).
  5. 5 ↩Normalized OCR/print forms: Letas→laetas, zequas→aequas; ignored stray '4' after Sobolem as a likely footnote marker/artifact.
  6. 6 ↩Continues the petition for sobolem (offspring) from PrecesPriv.1.106.2.s7: honorable in form and manners, then strong in growth and properly raised.
