The Fivefold Path and the Unity of Virtue
The chapter presents a monk's wisdom regarding the motivations for monastic life and the singular nature of virtue as it manifests through the soul.
Near Alexandria, at the northern end of Lake Maria, there is an island. A monk lives nearby who is the most highly regarded member of the contemplative community. He explained that everything monks do is done for one of five reasons: for God, by nature, from habit, out of necessity, or as part of their manual work. The same monk also said that virtue is one by nature, but takes distinct forms in the different powers of the soul. For sunlight, he said, has no shape of its own, yet by nature it takes the shape of the windows through which it enters.
