The Chain of Spiritual Growth
The author outlines the sequential progression from faith and the fear of God to the attainment of love through ascetic discipline.
Love is the offspring of freedom from the passions; freedom from the passions is the flower of the ascetic life; the ascetic life is built on keeping the commandments; and the guardian of the commandments is the fear of God, which is born of true faith. Faith, in turn, is an inwardly rooted good that naturally exists even in those who do not yet believe in God.12

Ἀπαθείας ἔγγονον ἀγάπη· ἀπάθεια δέ ἐστιν ἄνθος τῆς πρακτικῆς· πρακτικὴν δὲ συνίστησιν ἡ τήρησις τῶν ἐντολῶν· τούτων δὲ φύλαξ ὁ φόβος τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὅστις γέννημα τῆς ὀρθῆς ἐστι πίστεως· πίστις δέ ἐστιν ἐνδιάθετον ἀγαθόν, ἥτις ἐνυπάρχειν πέφυκε καὶ τοῖς μηδέπω πεπιστευκόσι Θεῷ.
