The Marks of Inner Freedom

True detachment is evidenced by the mind's ability to perceive its own light and maintain profound serenity amidst the movements of the soul.

A sign of freedom from the passions is that the mind begins to see its own light, remains calm when images arise in dreams, and views all things with serenity.12

Notes

  1. 1Rendered as “freedom from the passions,” the ascetic state of being undisturbed by disordered impulses, rather than modern emotional apathy.
  2. 2Literally “smooth”; here it describes the mind’s untroubled, even manner of seeing, rendered as “with serenity.”
