Standing Firm in the Cell

The monk is encouraged to remain steadfast in the face of acedia rather than fleeing, as endurance builds spiritual strength while avoidance breeds cowardice.

When temptations arise, do not leave your cell by inventing supposedly reasonable excuses. Instead, remain inside, endure, and bravely face everything that comes against you—especially the demon of acedia, which is the most oppressive of all, yet more than any other, it renders the soul proven through testing.1 For running away from such struggles and attempting to avoid them trains the mind to be unskilled, cowardly, and always ready to flee.

Notes

  1. 1Acedia is retained as the traditional ascetical term for a spiritually oppressive weariness, listlessness, and impulse to abandon one's discipline.
