Das Vater Unser

The Fatherhood of God

An introduction to the Lord's Prayer, focusing on the privilege of calling God 'Father' through Christ.

A preface and preparation for praying the seven petitions to God. Our Father, who is in heaven. The meaning. O almighty God, since through your boundless mercy you have not only allowed us, but also commanded and taught us through your only dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that through his merit and mediation we should regard and call you Father—even though you might justly, by all standards of righteousness, be a strict judge over us sinners, who have so much and so grievously acted against your divine, most perfect will, and have angered you. So, through that same mercy, give us a comforting confidence of your fatherly love in our hearts, and let us taste the lovely savor and sweetness of childlike security, so that we may joyfully name you Father, know you, love you, and call on you in all our needs. Guard us, so that we remain your children and don't become so guilty that we turn you, dearest Father, into a terrifying Judge, and change ourselves from children into enemies. You also want us not to call on you as Father alone, but together as Our Father, so that we pray for everyone alike with one heart. Therefore give us a united, brotherly love, so that we all recognize and regard one another as true brothers and sisters, and pray to you as our common dear Father for all and for everyone, as one child prays for another before their father. Let no one among us seek his own, or forget the other before you; rather, with all hatred, envy, and discord put away, let us love one another as true devout children of God, and so be able with one heart to say not "my Father," but "our Father." Also, because you are not a bodily father who is on earth, but you who are in heaven—a spiritual Father who does not die, is not uncertain, and is not unable to help himself, as the earthly and bodily father is. So that you may show us how immeasurably better a Father you are, and teach us to hold temporal fatherhood, homeland, friends, goods, flesh and blood as nothing before you.1 So grant us, O Father, that we may also be your heavenly children; teach us to attend only to the soul and the heavenly inheritance, so that our temporary homeland and earthly inheritance may not deceive us, entangle us, hinder us, and make us wholly into earthly children—so that we may say with true and solid ground, "O our heavenly Father," and may truly be your heavenly children.

The First Petition: Hallowing the Name

A prayer for the sanctification of God's name in our lives and the world.

The first petition. Hallowed be your name. The meaning. Almighty God, dear heavenly Father, your holy name is, sadly, so often and in so many ways profaned, blasphemed, and reviled in this wretched valley of tears. It is attributed to many things that have no part in your honor, and it is also misused in many matters and for sins, so that even a shameful life might well be called a disgrace and dishonor to your holy name. So grant us your divine grace, that we may keep ourselves from everything that does not serve the honor and praise of your holy Name. Help that all sorcery and false blessings may be done away with.2 Help that every kind of conjuring of the devil or of creatures done through your Name may cease.3 Help that all false belief and superstition may be rooted out. Help that all heresy and false teaching that present themselves under the appearance of your Name may come to nothing. Help that no false show of truth, piety, or holiness may deceive anyone. Help that no one swear by your Name, lie, or deceive. Guard us from every false comfort invented under your Name. Protect us from all spiritual pride and empty honor, and from worldly fame or renown. Help that in all our needs and failings we call on your holy Name. Help that in the anguish of our conscience, and at our last dying, we do not forget your Name. Help that in all our goods, words, and works we praise and honor you alone, and do not take a name for ourselves from them or seek one, but give all to you alone, to whom alone all things belong.4 Protect us from the shameful vice of ingratitude. Help that through our good works and way of life all others may be stirred not to praise us, but to praise you in us and honor your name. Help that no one may be led into offense by our evil works or failings, so as to dishonor your name or slacken in your praise.5 Guard us so that we desire nothing, whether for this life or for eternity, that isn't for the honor and praise of your name. And if we should ask for such things, do not answer our folly.6 Help that our life may be such that we are found to be true children of God, so that your fatherly name is not named over us in vain or falsely. Amen.7 This type of prayer includes all the psalms and prayers where people praise God, honor Him, sing to Him, and give Him thanks—along with the entire Alleluia.

The Second Petition: The Coming Kingdom

A petition for the reign of God's grace and virtue to overcome the kingdom of the world and the devil.

The Second Petition. May your kingdom come. The meaning. This wretched life is a kingdom of every wickedness, and its lord is the evil spirit—the beginning and chief villain of all wickedness and sin.8 But your kingdom is a kingdom of every grace and virtue, where there is one Lord: Jesus Christ, your dear Son, the head and beginning of every grace and virtue. So help us and show us grace, dear Father. Above all else, give us a true and steadfast faith in Christ, and an undaunted hope in your mercy against all the faint-heartedness of our sinful conscience.9 A fervent, sweet love for you and for all people.10 Guard us from unbelief, despair, and final envy.11 Help us free from the filthy lust of unchastity, and give us a love for virginity and every kind of chastity. Help us out of discord, war, and unrest, and let the virtues of your kingdom come to us: peace and unity, and a quiet life.12 Help us, so that anger or other bitterness does not set up its reign in us, but that through your grace a simple sweetness and brotherly faithfulness may rule in us, with every kind of friendliness, gentleness, and meekness.1314 Help us, so that disordered sadness and heaviness of heart are not in us, but let joy and delight come to us in your grace and mercy.15 And finally, that all sin may be turned away from us, and that we, filled with your grace and with every virtue and good work, may become your kingdom—so that all our heart, spirit, and mind, with every power within and without, may serve you in humble obedience according to your commandments and will, and let themselves be ruled by you alone, not following themselves after the flesh, the world, or the devil.1617 Help this kingdom of yours, which has already begun in us, to increase and to grow better and greater every day. That cunning wickedness may not overtake us, nor sluggishness toward the good, so that we do not fall back again.18 But give us a firm resolve and the strength not only to begin living a godly life, but far more to press on boldly in it and bring it to completion.19 As the Prophet says: Enlighten my eyes, so that I don't fall asleep or grow lazy in the good life I've begun, and so that my Enemy doesn't gain power over me again. Help us stay steadfast in this way, and let your coming kingdom close and complete this kingdom of yours that has already begun.20 Help us out of this sinful, dangerous life.21 Help us long for that life, and become enemies of this one. Help us not to fear death, but to long for it. Turn away from us the love and clinging of this life, so that your kingdom may in every way be brought to completion in us.22 All psalms, verses, and prayers in which we ask God for grace and virtue fall under this petition.

The Third Petition: Doing the Divine Will

A prayer for the surrender of our own will to God's perfect will in all circumstances.

The Third Petition. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The meaning. Our will, when set against your will, is never good; it is always evil. But your will is always the best—supremely to be loved and desired, to the highest degree. Therefore, have mercy on us, dear Father, and do not let anything happen according to our own will. Give us, and teach us, to have true, thorough patience when our will is broken or hindered. Help us whenever someone says, ignores, does, or neglects something that goes against our will, so that we don't grow angry or bitter—so that we don't curse, complain, cry out, judge, condemn, or talk back.23 Help us humbly to yield to those who oppose us and hinder our will, and so to let go of our own, that we praise them, bless them, and do them good—as those who carry out your divine, all-best will against our will.24 Give us grace to bear every kind of sickness, poverty, disgrace, suffering, and adversity willingly, and to recognize that this is your divine will, to crucify our own will. Help us suffer wrong gladly as well, and guard us from revenge. Do not let us repay evil with evil, or drive out force with force. Instead, let us take delight in your will that lays such things on us; let us praise you and give you thanks. Do not let us blame the devil or evil people when something meets us against our will, but only your divine will, which orders all such things to hinder our will and for greater blessedness in your kingdom.25 Help us to die willingly and gladly, and to welcome death as your will, so that we don't become disobedient to you through impatience or despair. Help us so that all our members—eyes, tongues, hearts, hands, and feet—aren't left free to their own desires or will, but are held captive, shackled, and broken under your will.26 Guard us from every evil, rebellious, hard-hearted, stiff-necked, obstinate, and self-willed will.27 Grant us true obedience and a perfectly free surrender in all things—spiritual, worldly, temporal, and eternal.28 Protect us from the cruel vices of gossip, slander, backbiting, rash judgment, condemning, and speaking ill of others.29 O the great misfortune and the heavy plague of such Turn tongues far from us. Rather, teach us that when we see or hear something blameworthy and displeasing about others, we keep silent about it, cover it over, lay it before you alone, and commit it to your will—and so sincerely forgive all who are indebted to us, and have compassion for them.30 Teach us to recognize that no one can truly harm us unless they have first done themselves a thousand times more harm in your eyes, so that we may be moved more to mercy toward them than to anger—more to pity them than to seek revenge. Help us not to rejoice when things go badly for those who haven't done our will, or who have otherwise displeased us in their lives. Also that we not grow bitter when things go well for them. All psalms, verses, and prayers in which we pray against sin and our internal enemies fall under this petition.31

The Fourth Petition: Daily Bread

A request for the spiritual and physical sustenance provided by God, centered on Christ.

The Fourth Petition. Give us today our daily bread. The meaning. This bread is our Lord Jesus Christ, who feeds and comforts the soul. Therefore, O dear heavenly Father, give grace that Christ's life, word, works, and suffering may be preached, made known, and held fast among us and throughout the whole world. Help us take his word and works, in every part of life, as a powerful example and mirror of every virtue. Help us, in suffering and adversity, to strengthen and comfort ourselves through and in his suffering and cross. Help us overcome our death through his death by firm faith, and so boldly follow our dear forerunner into the life to come.32 Give grace that all preachers may preach your Word and Christ throughout the whole world, usefully and for salvation.33 Help all who hear your Word preached to know Christ, and through it, sincerely amend their lives. Would you also graciously drive out of the holy Church all alien preaching and teaching where Christ is not learned.34 Have mercy on all bishops, priests, clergy, and those in authority, so that enlightened by your grace, they may rightly teach and lead us through their words and good examples.35 Guard all who are weak in faith, so they don't take offense at the bad example of those in authority.36 Guard us from heretical and apostate teachings, so that we may remain one in one daily bread—in the daily teaching and Word of Christ.37 Teach us by your grace to look rightly on Christ's suffering, take it to heart, and shape it blessedly into our lives. Do not let us be robbed of the holy, true Body of Christ at our final hour.38 Help all priests to administer and use the most holy Sacrament worthily and blessedly, for the betterment of all Christendom. Help us and all Christians to receive the holy Sacrament at the proper time with grace, for our blessing.39 Grant us blessed peace and unity in every land. Protect us from war, strife, and every kind of unrest, so that we may enjoy our daily bread and bodily food in quiet peace, to your praise.40 Give all kings, princes, lords, and counselors good understanding and a faithful will to govern their subjects blessedly and peacefully.41 Protect all subjects from rebellion and every kind of disobedience. Teach us by your Spirit to manage our household in a godly way, and to govern children and servants in a Christian manner, for your service, praise, and honor. Protect our children and servants from sin and shame, from danger and harm to body and soul.42 Protect the43 the crops in the field and all the livestock from storms, poison, wild animals, and every kind of harm, etc.44 Would you graciously comfort and deliver all captives, the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the wretched, widows, orphans, the sick, and all troubled people.45 Under this petition belong all prayers or psalms in which people pray for those in authority, especially against false teachers; for the Jews, heretics, and all who have gone astray; and also for all troubled and comfortless people, the poor, the needy, and those who suffer.46

The Fifth Petition: Forgiveness and Mercy

A plea for divine forgiveness, conditioned by our own willingness to forgive others.

The Fifth Petition. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. The meaning. This petition includes an addition and a condition: we must first forgive those who owe us. Once that is done, we may then say: Forgive us our debts.47 This is what we already prayed for in the third petition, that God's will be done—and His will is that we patiently bear everything, not repay evil with evil, not seek revenge, but do good in return for evil. Just as our Father in heaven does, who lets His sun rise on the good and the evil, and sends rain on those who thank Him and those who do not.48 So we pray: O Father, comfort our conscience, now and at our final hour—which is dreadfully terrified by our sins and your judgment, and will continue to be terrified. Give our hearts your peace, so that we may await your judgment with joy. Do not deal with us according to the severity of your judgment, for no human being will be found righteous there.49 Teach us, dear Father, not to rely on our good works or merit, or take comfort in them, but to venture and entrust ourselves purely and firmly to your bottomless mercy alone.50 In the same way, do not let us despair either because of our blameworthy sinful life, but count your mercy higher, broader, and stronger than all our life.51 Help everyone who is in the anguish of death and under the assault of such despair, especially N.52 or N.53 Forgive them and us all our debts; comfort them, and receive them into your grace. Give us your goodness in place of our wickedness, just as you have commanded us to do.54 Silence the cruel backbiter, accuser, and magnifier of our sins—the evil spirit—now, at our end, and in every anguish of conscience, since we also keep ourselves from backbiting and from magnifying the sins of others.55 Do not judge us by the accusations of the devil and of our wretched conscience, and do not heed the voice of our enemies who accuse us day and night before you, just as we refuse to listen to the backbiters and accusers of others. Take from us the heavy burden of all sin and of conscience, so that with a light, joyful, and heartfelt conscience, in full confidence in your mercy, we may live and die, and may suffer and do all things.56 All psalms and prayers that call on God's mercy for sin belong to this petition.

The Sixth Petition: Deliverance from Temptation

A prayer for strength against the assaults of the flesh, the world, and the devil.

The Sixth Petition. And don't lead us into temptation. The meaning. We have three temptations or assaults: the flesh, the world, and the devil.57 Therefore we pray, dear Father: give us grace to master the lust of the flesh. Help us resist its other excesses too: eating and drinking, sleeping, laziness, and idleness.58 Help us make it serviceable and ready for good works through fasting, moderate food, clothing, and bedding, and through watching and working.59 Help us nail to the cross with Christ and put to death its evil bent toward unchastity and all its desires and enticements, so that we neither consent to nor follow any of its assaults. Help us, when we see a beautiful person, an image, or other creatures, that this not become an assault on us, but a reason to love chastity and to praise you in your creatures. When we hear something sweet or feel something lovely, help us not to seek pleasure in it, but your praise and honor. Protect us from the great vice of greed and from craving the riches of this world. Protect us, so that we don't seek the honor and power of this world, or give in to that same inclination. Protect us, so that we aren't drawn by the world's evils and adversities into impatience, revenge, anger, or any other vice.60 Help us renounce and forsake the world's lying, deceiving, false promises, and unfaithfulness—along with all its good and evil, as we pledged in baptism—and to stand firm in that renunciation, growing in it more and more each day.6162 Protect us from the devil's promptings, so we don't give in to pride, self-satisfaction, or contempt for others because of wealth, rank, power, skill, beauty, or any of your other gifts. Protect us, so we don't fall into hatred or envy for any reason. Protect us, so we don't yield to temptation against the faith, or to despair, now and at our final hour.63 Heavenly Father, take into your care all who fight and labor against the great and many-sided temptation. Strengthen those who still stand; help up again those who have fallen and lie down. And give us all your grace, that in this wretched and uncertain life, surrounded without rest by so many enemies, we may fight steadfastly with a knightly, firm faith and obtain the eternal crown.

The Seventh Petition: Deliverance from Evil

A final plea for deliverance from all evil and a confident conclusion to the prayer.

The seventh petition. But deliver us from evil. The meaning. This petition asks for deliverance from every evil of pain and punishment, just as the holy Church does in its litanies. Deliver us, O Father, from your eternal wrath and from the pains of hell. Deliver us from your stern judgment, in death and on the Last Day. Deliver us from sudden death.64 Guard us from water and fire, from lightning and hail. Guard us from hunger and times of scarcity.65 Guard us from wars and bloodshed. Guard us from your great plagues, from pestilence, the French disease, and other serious illnesses.66 Protect us from every evil and from the body's distresses — yet so that in all of this the honor of your Name, the growth of your kingdom, and your divine will may be done. Amen. Help us, God, that we may obtain all these petitions without doubt, and do not let us doubt it: you have heard us in this and will hear us, so that it is Yes, and not a No or any doubt. So we joyfully say Amen—that is, true and certain. Amen.

Notes

  1. 1für dir may mean 'before you' (in your sight/preference) or 'for your sake'; the rendering keeps the ranking-before-God sense without inventing a stronger contrast.
  2. 2falsche Segen: in early modern German devotional usage, often covers superstitious charms and pretended blessings as well as false benedictions.
  3. 3beschweren may mean conjurings/adjurations (near beschwören) or burdens/afflictions (Beschwerden). Surrounding petitions against sorcery, false blessings, and misuse of the Name favor the conjuring sense; the alternate would be: 'every kind of affliction from the devil or from creatures may cease through your Name.'
  4. 4Source reads 'alleiue' at the close; translated as 'alleine' ('alone'), the obvious Early New High German form in 'des alle ding alleine sind'.
  5. 5geergert (geärgert) is rendered as 'led into offense' (scandalized); early modern sense is causing others to stumble, not mere annoyance.
  6. 6daß nicht deines Namens Ehre noch Lob sey is a double negative construction: desire nothing that is not for the honor or praise of your name. woltestu ... nicht erhören is a solemn subjunctive petition ('would you not hear').
  7. 7vber vns genennet (named over us) keeps the biblical idiom of God's name being called upon a people, not merely spoken about them.
  8. 8Heuptschalck (Hauptschalk): Early New High German for the chief knave/rogue; rendered as 'chief villain' for the devil as principal author of evil.
  9. 9Early NHG Blödigkeit means faint-heartedness, timidity, or weakness of spirit, not modern 'stupidity'.
  10. 10brünstig here is spiritual fervor/ardor, not erotic heat.
  11. 11endlichem is taken as 'final/ultimate' (envy as a decisive, damning vice). Less likely: 'temporal/this-worldly' envy (endlich vs. ewig).
  12. 12deines Reichs Tugend is read as the kingdom's virtues (peace, unity, quiet life) granted as gift; Friede/einigkeit/stilles Leben are treated as that virtue's content, not a separate unrelated list.
  13. 13sein Reich vberkomme: taken as anger/bitterness establishing its own reign in us (not 'His kingdom' as God's). regiere is optative/petitionary.
  14. 14einfeltige süssigkeit: Luther's einfältig as guileless/simple-hearted, not foolish; rendered 'simple sweetness'.
  15. 15Lust here is positive delight/gladness in grace (contrast vnfletigen lust in s1). vnordige betrübnis = disordered/undue grief, not every sorrow.
  16. 16ENHG 'Muth' (with Hertz and Sinn) is rendered 'spirit' as the middle term of the inner triad heart–spirit–mind; it can also shade toward disposition or courage of heart.
  17. 17'dein Reich werden' is kept as 'become your kingdom' (not merely 'enter' it): the petition is that grace make us the place where God's reign is present.
  18. 18listige bößheit / die tragheit zu dem guten may be read as two parallel threats (cunning wickedness and sluggishness toward the good) or as apposition (cunning wickedness, namely sluggishness toward the good). Rendered as parallel subjects; the sense is nearly the same either way.
  19. 19from = fromm (godly/devout). kecklich = boldly, stoutly, with confident courage; not flippant boldness.
  20. 20Early NHG 'beschliesse vnd vollende' pairs 'bring to a close' with 'bring to completion': the future kingdom crowns and perfects the kingdom already begun in us, rather than merely ending it.
  21. 21'fehrlichen' = Early NHG gefährlichen (dangerous/perilous), not 'fernen' (distant).
  22. 22'anhangen' = attachment/clinging (to this life), not merely fondness; rendered as 'clinging' to keep the disordered-attachment sense.
  23. 23lesst = lässt: leave undone / omit, paired with thut (does); again / wieder = wider, 'against'.
  24. 24vnsern also fahren lassen: 'so let ours go'—ours = our will; fahren lassen = abandon / let go.
  25. 25zu rechnen can mean attribute/charge/blame; rendered as 'blame' for natural prayer cadence while keeping the causal attribution sense.
  26. 26Early New High German stöcken/gestöckt: put in the stocks, confined, or fixed fast. Rendered as 'shackled' to keep the restraint image alongside gefangen (captive) and gebrochen (broken).
  27. 27Taken as a form related to widerspenstig/spänstig: refractory, rebellious, wayward — fitting this catalogue of will-defects rather than a ghostly/spectral sense.
  28. 28ledige gelassenheit: Early modern mystical term for free, unencumbered releasement/surrender of self-will; rendered as 'free surrender' rather than bare 'detachment' to keep the prayerful force.
  29. 29versprechen here is the speech-sin sense (revile/speak against), not 'promise'; fits the catalogue of tongue-vices (nachreden, verleumden, afterreden, frevel richten, verdammen).
  30. 30Early NHG strefflich (sträflich) = reprehensible/blameworthy, not merely ‘offensive’; mißfellig = displeasing to us. heim geben = entrust/commit into someone’s keeping (here God’s will).
  31. 31Early New High German wieder here is taken as wider, 'against' (not modern wieder, 'again'). innen is taken as 'within/inwardly' (interior spiritual enemies), not as a dative of persons.
  32. 32Early modern 'kecklich' means boldly/confidently, not recklessly; 'Fürgenger' is forerunner/pioneer, a Christ title.
  33. 33seliglich retains salvific force (unto blessedness/salvation), not mere cheerfulness; nützbarlich is 'usefully/profitably,' not 'entertainingly.'
  34. 34frembde Predige und Lehre: 'alien/foreign' preaching and teaching—doctrine not centered on Christ, not merely non-local preaching.
  35. 35Oberkeit covers spiritual and temporal governing authority; rendered 'all in authority' to keep the breadth without modern political narrowing.
  36. 36sich ergern is scandal/offense (stumbling), not mere annoyance; schwachgleubigen are the weak in faith.
  37. 37"täglichen Brod" continues the Lord's Prayer petition for daily bread, here spiritualized as shared daily teaching of Christ.
  38. 38"Leichnam Christi" is the corporeal Body of Christ in the Sacrament (not a mere corpse metaphor); kept as Body of Christ for Eucharistic specificity.
  39. 39"seliglich" can mean blessedly or unto salvation/blessedness; rendered as "unto our blessing" to keep the salvific force without archaic diction.
  40. 40stiller ruge = quiet rest/peace (Ruhe); rendered as 'quiet peace' to keep the calm enjoyment of provision, not mere idleness.
  41. 41seliglich can mean 'blessedly' or 'to a saving/good end'; rendered 'blessedly' to keep the spiritual force without archaic 'wholesomely'.
  42. 42Early modern 'Fahr' = Gefahr (danger/peril); 'für' here means 'from/against' (protective vor).
  43. 43Source sentence is truncated mid-phrase ('Behüt die'); neighboring next section continues with field fruits, livestock, and protection from storm, poison, wild beasts, and harm.
  44. 44Continues the petition begun in the previous section with 'Behüt die' ('Protect the…'); 'für' here means protection from/against the listed dangers.
  45. 45Early NHG erlassen here means release/deliver (especially for captives) rather than remit a debt; rendered as deliver to cover both liberation and relief.
  46. 46Early modern 'wieder' here is 'wider' (against), not 'again': sonderlich wieder die falschen Lehrer = especially against false teachers.
  47. 47Early New High German beydingung = Bedingung, 'condition'; anhang = addition/appendix (a rider attached to the petition).
  48. 48Luther's phrasing pairs frommen/bösen with those who thank / do not thank God, a slightly freer expansion of Matthew 5:45's just/unjust pair; rendered closely to the German rather than collapsed into the more familiar English biblical cadence.
  49. 49scherffe deines Gerichts: rendered as severity of judgment (rigor/strictness), not mere sharpness as a metaphor.
  50. 50grundlose Barmhertzigkeit: rendered bottomless mercy (unfathomable/immeasurable), preserving Luther's spatial image of depth rather than a flat 'infinite'.
  51. 51strefflichen: Early New High German for sträflichen—blameworthy/reprehensible, not merely 'punished'.
  52. 52Anfechtung is rendered as spiritual assault/trial (here of despair), not merely generic temptation. N. is the prayer-book placeholder for a named person.
  53. 53Second name-slot alternative (N. = insert a name), continuing the intercession formula from s1.
  54. 54für can mean in place of, in return for, or on account of; the sense is reciprocal kindness for evil, matching the Lord's Prayer forgiveness pattern and the command to do likewise.
  55. 55Affterreder is older German for a backbiter/slanderer (one who speaks ill behind another's back); Großmacher is one who magnifies or makes much of sins.
  56. 56Source surface 'sierben' is read as Early Modern German 'sterben' (die), the expected pair with 'leben'; the normalized text retains the printed form.
  57. 57Anfechtung is the classic Lutheran term for spiritual trial or assault, broader than mere temptation (Versuchung); both are retained here as a pair.
  58. 58vbrigen (übrigen) can mean 'remaining/further' or 'superfluous/excessive.' Rendered as the flesh's further excesses after lust: overindulgence in food, drink, sleep, laziness, and idleness.
  59. 59Lager is sleeping place/bedding; messigem Futter is moderate food (literally 'fodder,' plain fare). The list names the means by which the flesh is disciplined and made fit for good works.
  60. 60„den bösen“ is taken as substantive „evils“ paired with „Widerwertigkeiten“ (adversities/afflictions), not as an incomplete adjective needing a further noun.
  61. 61„absagen / versachen“ is baptismal renunciation language (forswear/renounce), not a generic “say no.” The parenthetical points back to the baptismal vow.
  62. 62„verheissen“ is rendered as the world’s empty/false promising rather than divine promise, given the surrounding vices (lying, deceiving, unfaithfulness).
  63. 63Anfechtung des Glaubens: rendered as temptation against the faith (spiritual assault on belief), in parallel with Verzweifelung (despair). Anfechtung is the Lutheran term for trial/temptation/assault.
  64. 64Early NHG 'schnellen gehenden Todt' is the traditional litany sense of a sudden, unprepared death (Lat. mors subitanea), not merely a quick death as a medical fact.
  65. 65'thewren zeiten' (teuren Zeiten) means times when food and necessities are dearly expensive—scarcity or famine years, not merely 'expensive times' in a general economic sense.
  66. 66'Frantzosen' is the early modern German name for syphilis (morbus Gallicus, the 'French disease'), not the French people.
