The Path of Surrender

The spiritual life is a diverse journey that ultimately requires the total surrender of the soul to God's providence.

May the Lord help you and set your path toward Himself in order. There are many roads, and they all lead to one place. The closer they get to that place, the closer they come to one another; but at the start, how different they are—even opposite, like the roads from Tver and from Ryazan to Moscow. That's why it's so hard to guess what each person needs, and how. That's why there is an inevitable law for those going to the Lord: the law of surrendering yourself to God.1 We hear the word, and we read it, and we reason about it—and yet the whole thing goes on completely not according to our calculations. May the Lord make you wise.

Communion and Divine Presence

The experience of Holy Communion reveals the soul's need for God, teaching us to value His presence and accept His withdrawal with gratitude.

I've been absorbed by the state of your heart after Communion of the Holy2 Mysteries. For the Holy Mysteries are prefigured by the manna. It tasted different depending on what each person needed. And so Communion of the Holy Mysteries has given you a taste of what you need. Now your heart knows what it means to be with the Lord and what it means to be without Him: how good it is when He is near to warm and delight you, and what becomes of the soul when He withdraws. Macarius of Egypt's comparison comes to mind — of how God's grace works with how a mother acts toward her child. When a child grows careless and, because of his mother's constant care, forgets how dear she is to him, the mother leaves him alone and hides herself. The child starts to cry when he sees that he's alone. Right away, the mother picks him up again. How tightly he clings to his mother's breast then! And just before that he had been looking this way and that, getting distracted, laughing, forgetting his mother. That is exactly how it is with the soul. Our part is to accept everything and give thanks for everything.✦ Glory be to the Lord forever!

The Science of Humility

True self-knowledge and the fear of God are the essential foundations for a life of humility and spiritual progress.

It's hard for us to grasp with our minds—and even harder to feel in our hearts—what we are on our own. We should spend a whole lifetime learning this, and it is the chief science. Progress in this area goes hand in hand with humility and self-abasement. Without this, we won't even understand how natural the deepest humility is for the saints. And true fear of God comes by that same path. The fear of God should never leave the heart. Love drives out one kind of it, and gives birth to another.3 And the heavenly powers stand before God with fear and trembling. In it there is no torment and dread, but a sweet refreshment—and yet it is still fear, sometimes crushing the bones. That’s how it has to be. And we ought to pray: Plant Your fear in my heart.

The Discipline of Prayer

Prayer is the primary work of the Christian, requiring thoughtful preparation, reverence, and bodily discipline.

Prayer is truly the main work. It's our path to God; everything else is just a help toward that end. I'll only say that a little preparation is needed before prayer.4 Don't rush straight to the Lord; you need to dress yourself spiritually, the way people do when they go before a king—at least think a little first about yourself and about God. Who are we, and who is the One we want to speak with? What do we need, and by what right do we dare to ask for it? —and things like that. But the main thing is first to set yourself in God's presence with self-abasement and speak as if into His ear—simply, like a child.✦5 It’s good to make bows, and it’s good to stand straight as a string, not letting your limbs hang lazy and careless, but keeping them all under a certain tension. Lord, have mercy on us! May the Lord grant us all to labor as much as each of us has strength and zeal. May the Mother of God cover you with her protection!6

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩1Thess.5.18 — Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
  2. ↩Matt.18.3 — And he said, "Truly I tell you, unless you turn and become like the children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Богопреданность rendered as 'surrendering yourself to God' (self-entrustment / devotion of oneself to God), not mere religious feeling.
  2. 2 ↩Russian «причастие Св. Таин» is the Orthodox phrase for receiving Holy Communion (the Holy Mysteries); the source splits the abbreviation «Св. Таин» across sentence boundaries.
  3. 3 ↩Traditional ascetical distinction: love casts out slavish/servile fear, while begetting filial or reverent fear.
  4. 4 ↩чинить here is older Russian for 'to make/do,' not 'to repair.'
  5. 5 ↩самоуничиженно is the Orthodox ascetical term for deliberate self-abasement/self-humbling before God, not mere low self-esteem.
  6. 6 ↩Russian «осеняет вас покровом Своим» carries the Marian Pokrov image: overshadowing with her protecting veil/mantle, not mere general care.
