The Necessity of Holy Fear
The author emphasizes that fear of God is a necessary fence for the soul to discern true love from delusion.
Glory to God! Well, you've begun to understand that fear is necessary: it's a reliable fence.1 Pray to the Lord and to the Most Pure Lady that it may come and fill your heart completely.2 There's nothing sickly in it—only a reverent, sober, sobering, and refreshing feeling, like a morning breeze; it doesn't take warmth away, but gives warmth its true temperature. Love alone softens and melts the heart open.3 But there is also a deceptive warmth from elsewhere—a state that looks like love, though in fact love itself isn't there, only its phantom.4 This last thing makes the soul a bold mistress of the house, and then she grants herself liberties and indulgences, as if by some right, treating them as nothing and never expecting to answer for them. It's well if you get through this—if your Guardian Angel holds you by the hand and turns every trouble aside; otherwise, it can end with one indulgence after another, and then—farewell to everything. It is precisely because of this danger that great fear accompanied the saints, right up to their very departure, and after their departure—until God's judgment.5 It cuts away every alien fancy and sets the soul straight.6 And we must pray! Plant Your fear, O Lord, in the hearts of us who sing of You.7
The Wisdom of Divine Withdrawal
God withdraws His consoling grace to teach the soul humility and to reveal its true state without His immediate support.
So, that's what your fast was like on Great8 Friday!9 Only you're wrong to attack the fast — and you've gotten so angry at it that you'll never fast that way again. As God grants.10 Maybe you'll even fast for a whole week, and nothing like that will happen. This is what the Lord wanted to show you—what you are on your own, without His overshadowing and covering grace. At that time, the Lord withdrew from you a little—He didn't abandon you, but He withdrew: you were left alone, with only your own strength and nothing but what is already in you.11 That is the law of God's all-wise grace. First, it floods the soul with every kind of consolation, and everything feels easy; the heart is clothed, as if in a garment, with warmth, and the mind with the brightness of contemplation. But right then, a tempting thought is close at hand: Well, glory to God.12 . . now it seems we're already established (you have that expression in your letter)—not like before.13 . . Things are going well. . . The heart isn't bad, and the mind is something too.14 . . What was good before came not at all from your own strength and labors, but from the Lord, by His goodness alone; and you, for your part, no doubt daydreamed, or put your trust in yourself, or felt yourself strong and safe. The Lord withdrew the garment of His grace from you, and you were left alone. . . Everything became dry, hard, and gloomy.15 . . t. e. The Lord answered your thoughts: "Here—look at what your heart is, and what your mind is!" Your heart is angry, your mind doesn't know what it's thinking about, and your will has lost all its zeal. So, there is God's lesson for you. Learn it by heart—and do not know yourself as anything other than what you were that day.16 If you find yourself better, give all of that back to the Lord—and thank Him, and cry out in fear: Lord, do not take from me the covering of Your grace—and always see yourself as you were that day.17 Grace carries the soul as a mother carries her child. When the child starts acting up and, instead of the mother, begins staring at other things, the mother leaves the child alone and hides. When the child notices it's alone, it starts crying out and calling for its mother. . . The mother returns and picks up the child. . . Then the child presses even more tightly against its mother's breast. Grace does the same. When the soul grows proud and forgets that it is carried and held by grace, grace withdraws. . . And it leaves the soul alone. . . Why? So that the soul may come to its senses, feel the distress of grace's withdrawal, and begin to cling more tightly to it and seek it. Such a withdrawal is not an act of anger, but of God's instructing love, and it is called an instructive withdrawal.18 Macarius the Great and others have a lot to say about this. . . And in Diadochus, I believe, toward the end.19
Discipline and the Inner Life
The author provides practical guidance on fasting, guarding the mind, and resisting self-will to maintain spiritual sobriety.
It's good that this happened to you. Learn from it. And don't shy away from fasting. It's a most precious thing.20 Only little by little. . . Usually in such a way that after eating, everything in the soul remains as it was before—that is,21 e. and the same warmth of heart and the same clarity of mind. That's the measure. That will determine the amount as well. You should take on a special fast only when there's an interior need—the soul demands it, the conscience binds you. . . Then your strength will be greater, too, because the soul is angry with its body and wants to mortify it.22 I've become very scattered. . . And you have to admit, what self-will!23 I'm only human, after all; but if you turn aside even a little, judgment starts up in the soul.24 . . It gets tiresome—before, things were more peaceful and cheerful. What a terrible word escaped from you. It's the same as saying: Depart—I don't want to know Your ways. Repent and weep bitterly before the Lord, so that He doesn't grow angry over this whim and say: If you don't want it, then get out. . . There is an inward, invisible judgment of God, and God's rejection. Ah! Deliver us, Lord, from it. Of course, we're human like everyone else, and we can't break free from everything all at once—but any leniency we allow ourselves must be forced, with self-condemnation, not claimed as a right. By right, we are sinners unworthy of any consolation. . . If the Lord has still left both outward and inward consolations on earth, it's only so that we don't fall into despair—that is,25 i.e.,26 to show us that He is ready to have mercy on us, and not because we had any right to consolation. A prisoner in a dungeon is sometimes granted a privilege—not by his own right, but by the King's mercy; that is us. Things used to be more peaceful and cheerful. What was before wasn't what ought to be. Those were only illusions of peace and cheer, born of self-forgetfulness, as if you were intoxicated. If you put in the work, the Lord will grant you solid, true peace. But you have to put in the work. Step aside — judgment and anxiety. Thank God that there is judgment and anxiety — and trouble — when that sobering voice falls silent.27 Do you really want to throw yourself into everything without any check or restraint? . . What self-will!28 Who are you saying this to? For it's the Lord who wants to rule over you—or rather, wants you to yield to Him the right He has over you. Are you some kind of mistress?29 You are a bondwoman, bought with the price of blood that cries out more than Abel's—either for your justification if you submit to the One who redeemed you, or for your condemnation if you rebel. Learn this by heart and listen to the voice that says to you: this is not good—leave it; and this is good—do it (read chapter 6).30 of the Epistle to the Romans.) . For the Lord's sake, work out your salvation with fear.✦ Don't carelessly give your soul free rein. You must always keep it on a leash—in your thoughts, feelings, and desires—precisely because they aren't good or well-disposed toward us; they are in league with the prince of this age against the Lord who was crucified for us.✦31 I asked you before, and now I beg you: listen to what the inner voice says to you, and meet its demands at once. Don't give the soul free rein.
The Work of Standing in the Heart
The core of spiritual struggle is the effort to keep the mind collected in the heart, where true prayer and peace reside.
So what are we even talking about now? And what good is it when with one hand we build and with the other we tear down?✦ You give free rein to your thoughts, words, and deeds, telling yourselves that others are forcing you into it.32 What are we working toward now, if not keeping the mind sober despite every outward distraction?33 If you stay collected while sitting alone, reading, thinking things through, and praying, there is no real spiritual struggle in that.34 That happens on its own. It would be absurd for the mind to wander even then. But the true struggle is this: to stand before the Lord with your mind, even when everything pulls it away from Him. Examine this work carefully and pursue it. How? Once you begin, you'll see how. Avoid idle talk, jokes, and laughter. You must restrain your tongue. It is a wheel that is usually set in motion by hellish vapors (James 3:6).35 ch. 3:6). Speak when you have to. You should have only one speech: Lord, have mercy on me—a prayer sanctified by the sweetest name of the Lord. This is a non-negotiable law, not something you can take or leave. Don't be angry that I wrote this bluntly; that's just how it is, and it can't be otherwise. May the Lord give you wisdom. You liked the saying: don't measure yourself. Did you really understand what that means? Not measuring yourself means not thinking, "Look, I've already grown an arshin—ten sazhens—while that one is only half an arshin, and this one doesn't even have a quarter," and the like; instead, it means thinking that we are nothing—yet without stopping, and more and more zealously pressing on to make progress, according to the Apostle: "forgetting what is behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, until we attain to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Phil. 3:13; Eph. 4:13).✦36 3:13; Eph. 4:13).✦ For the Lord's sake, don't take these words to mean: what's already there is enough—why force yourself? No. "Imitate me," the Apostle says, "as I imitate Christ" (1 Cor. 11:1). 4:16).✦ Set these patterns before your mind and strive zealously to mirror them in yourselves; otherwise it seems you’ve decided a soft little pillow has been slipped under you so you can sleep more peacefully. God forbid! Be zealous.37 Isn't it remarkable, tell me? What could be more familiar to us than the heart? And yet, we don't know where it is, and we can't find its place. And yet, we must. May the Lord bless you! Work at it, but without special strain and effort. Pray that the Lord and the Most Pure Mother of God help you. I seem to remember you wrote that this attention even gives you a headache. Yes—that happens if you work only with your head. But when you descend into the heart, there will be no labor at all: the head will clear, and your thoughts will cease. They are all in your head, chasing one another, and there is no way to get them under control. But if you find your heart and learn to stand within it, then whenever thoughts begin to trouble you, you only have to descend into your heart, and those thoughts will scatter. It will be a cozy corner, a safe haven. Don't be lazy about making that descent. .38 .39 Life is in the heart; that is where you need to live. Don't think this is only for the perfect. No. It's the work of everyone just beginning to seek the Lord. Life only truly begins when a concentrated, unquenchable warmth appears in the heart; a light, slight warmth is very fragile. At first, God created a diffuse light, and on the fourth day, He gathered it around the sun. It's the same in the spiritual life—through reading, meditation on God, prayer, church, and conversation, warmth enters the heart. But it's a light kind of warmth, something wafted in rather than grafted in.40 It needs to gather and settle in the heart, take graft there, smolder, and burn.41 Then it's a joy.42 This is the fire the Lord came to cast upon the earth. May the Lord bless you. Keep working, but don't think you can do anything on your own; instead, cry out with compunction: Lord, help! Lord, kindle it!43 One elder spent two years pleading with the Most Pure Mother of God, and she gave him the fire, and he says it went well. As for you, pray and labor—44 that is,45 seek how to become established in the heart. And the Lord, seeing your labor and that you sincerely desire this good, will grant you the grace of a burning heart.46 For that is what it means—to stand in the heart.47 Only then can you stand firm—once it catches fire; until then, it's labor.48 Don't lose heart. Flee from all sorts of imaginings.49 There's nothing extraordinary about any of this. This is the common path. Take courage. The Mother of God is your helper. . . Father O.50 Seraphim will teach you. Remember how he was once, during the Liturgy, embraced by the fire of the heart.51 What a blessed state! It's possible for us, too. And it doesn't take great labor—just steady labor.52 And that is paradise!
Perseverance in the Spiritual Path
The letter concludes with an exhortation to patient, lifelong labor and trust in God's mercy despite inevitable falls.
Seek, and you'll find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. For the Lord's sake, pay attention to your own heart when it comes to other people's affairs. You'll have sense enough to find excuses for them. There's often a strong unrest in your heart. Setting aside whether you’re right or wrong, I focus on the heart alone — and there I see fire, a wound, pain. Turn there yourself as well — and have compassion for yourself. What business do we have with others when there’s a fire at home? . . Let's hurry home and start putting out the fire. Prepare yourselves in advance for the battle: think through every possible scenario, work them over, and decide ahead of time what thoughts you'll use to drive back what is wrong in each case.53 This method helps a great deal, because you won't be caught off guard. As for the rest, time and experience will teach you. Just never abandon the good intention to cleanse yourself and set yourself right. The root of life is found in a firm resolve to work for the Lord until the end of your life.54 When this is present, there is life; when it isn't, there is no life. With it there may be mistakes, deviations, even hard falls; but when it remains whole, all is not yet lost. If someone falls, they'll get back up; if they're bruised, they'll heal. It's the thread on which all good things are strung, but it's also the knife that cuts away everything that isn't good.55 Keep this heartfelt zeal, dedicating yourself to the Lord moment by moment. And as for the fact that, under the circumstances, omissions, retreats, and even crooked steps sometimes happen involuntarily—56 .57 .58 What are you to do? Just don't make excuses for them. Judge yourselves before the Lord, be contrite, and confess to Him. And further—never let yourselves fall into anything willfully and knowingly. Wait patiently for the Lord through all the distractions, hindrances, and inconveniences.59 He sees everything, and with a right measure He will measure what you are.✦ And how are we sinners supposed to figure out what we are? Dust and ashes.✦ Grow stronger in prayer little by little. The kingdom of God does not come with observation.✦ — Like rain on a fleece, it will come down in the unnoticed hour of night.✦ And not all at once—you have to work for it. After the labor comes rest as well: the peace of God, which surpasses every mind.✦ With Father O.60 Seraphim, this is called the peaceful ordering of the heart.61 May the Lord keep you! Grace to you and peace from the Lord. Pray to God for me.

Notes

- 4 ↩блажная теплота: блажная can mean blissful or foolish/delusive (from блажь). Context (от инуды, phantom of love) favors delusive/false spiritual warmth, not blessed warmth.
- 5 ↩«Исход» here means death / departure from this life; «решение Божие» is God's judgment or final verdict.
- 6 ↩«Ставит душу в струнку» is idiomatic for bringing the soul into disciplined order—kept taut and upright, not loose.

- 9 ↩With s1, Великая Пятница = Orthodox Great Friday (Good Friday).
- 10 ↩Как Бог даст is a fixed pious phrase: as God grants/wills; kept as a sober reply to the reader's vow never to fast that way again.

- 25 ↩Source ends mid-abbreviation «т.» (start of «т.е.» = ‘that is’); completed in sense here and continued in s6–s7.
- 26 ↩Orphaned fragment «е.» completing the abbreviation «т.е.» begun in s5; sense absorbed into s5’s ‘that is,’ and s7’s continuation.
- 27 ↩остепеняющий голос: sobering/restraining voice that brings one to order; rendered as "sobering voice."

- 45 ↩Source is residual 'е.' completing the abbreviation т.е. ('that is' / i.e.).
- 46 ↩благодать горения сердечнаго: 'the grace of a burning heart' (grace of heart-fervor/heart-fire), continuous with the fire imagery of the letter.
- 47 ↩в сердце-то стоять: hesychastic idiom of abiding/standing in the heart; emphatic particle -то retained as stress on 'the heart'.
- 48 ↩«Оно» continues the prior section’s heart-burning theme: standing firm in the heart becomes possible only after the heart is kindled by grace; until then the work is still labor.
- 49 ↩«Воображения» here is the ascetical sense—mental images, fantasies, and invented pictures—not mere creativity.
- 50 ↩Батюшка is the familiar Orthodox address for a priest; rendered as Father. The initial О. is left abbreviated as in the source.
- 51 ↩обедня rendered as Liturgy (Divine Liturgy); огнем сердечным as fire of the heart, keeping the interior-flame image rather than flattening it to mere emotion.

- 60 ↩Sentence break mid-phrase: s4–s5 form one unit, 'У Батюшки О. 'О.' is almost certainly the clerical abbreviation о. for 'отец' (Father), i.e. Father Seraphim (St. Seraphim of Sarov).
- 61 ↩Together with s4: according to Father Seraphim this is called the peaceful ordering (or disposition) of the heart — a known Seraphim-of-Sarov phrase for the settled peace of the heart after spiritual labor.
