Письмо 16
The Fire of the Spirit
The author invokes the grace of the Holy Spirit upon the reader, emphasizing that earnest prayer and humility are the keys to kindling divine love.
Blessed are You, O Christ our God, and so on.1 We are celebrating Pentecost. May the Giver of all things grant you the breath and overshadowing of God's Spirit!✦2 May His warmth heat your heart more and more—until a fire is kindled that burns up and consumes everything!✦ So be it!3 And it will be, if you put forth earnest labor and a painful falling down before God.4 For the Lord is generous and merciful.
The True Pilgrimage
True spiritual seeking is not found in external travel to holy places, but in the interior life where God dwells within the heart.
Look — the pilgrims have appeared.5 Everyone is searching! It's good that they're searching. Just don't think that the Lord is closer to Kiev or Moscow, Athos or Jerusalem, than to any other place. His place is our heart! And when He comes in and dines with us.6 . .
The Journey to the Heart
The path to the heart is a difficult but fruitful inner journey that leads to a state of holy stillness and detachment from the world.
There you have Jerusalem itself—and even more than Jerusalem.7 This is what we should set ourselves to.8 The heart is within us; but there’s a journey to the heart—and sometimes it’s very long indeed. This journey is harder, more precious in the Lord’s eyes, and far more fruitful. Whoever completes it will no longer want to wander, but will love to stay at home, all alone by himself.9 He doesn’t want to see, hear, speak, or move. . .
The Vision of Divine Grace
The culmination of the inner life is a profound vision of God that consumes the soul, for which the author prays for the reader.
In him there is a vision, wonderful and most wonderful, which absorbs all his attention, all his love, and all his care. May the Lord grant us this grace as well, the source of all graces!

Scripture echoes
- ↩Luke.1.35 — And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore also the one to be born will be called Son of God."
- ↩Deut.4.24;Heb.12.29 — For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Heb.12.29 — For our God is a consuming fire.
Notes
- 1 ↩Opens with the fixed Pentecost troparion incipit (Church Slavonic form preserved in the Russian source); 'и проч.' marks that the rest of the hymn is assumed.
- 2 ↩'веяние' rendered as 'breath' (Spirit's blowing); 'осенение' as 'overshadowing' (classic biblical/liturgical term for the Spirit's covering presence).
- 3 ↩Church Slavonic 'Буди!' = Amen / 'let it be'; kept as 'So be it!' rather than bare 'Amen' to match Feofan's liturgical cadence.
- 4 ↩'болезненное ... припадание' is penitential prostration/falling before God with sorrow; not mere physical pain, but costly, aching prayer.
- 5 ↩поклонники can mean worshipers or pilgrims; given the following list of holy places (Kiev, Moscow, Athos, Jerusalem), pilgrims is the intended sense.
- 6 ↩внидет и возвечеряет is Church Slavonic diction echoing Revelation 3:20 (come in and sup). The Russian is elliptical; 'with us' is supplied from that biblical frame and the preceding sentence on the heart as His place.
- 7 ↩«паче Иерусалима» uses Church Slavonic паче (‘more than’): the heart where the Lord enters is not merely equal to Jerusalem but surpasses it.
- 8 ↩«восхлопочем» is elevated/colloquial-devotional: take pains, busy ourselves, make something our earnest concern—not mere anxiety.
- 9 ↩«один одинехонек» is emphatic colloquial solitude (‘utterly alone’); rendered as ‘all alone by himself’ to keep the affectionate intensity without archaism.
