The Call to Repentance
The arrival of the pre-Lenten season signals a time to open the doors of repentance and cast ourselves into the mercy of God.
Today is the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee!✦ You've heard the sound of the trumpet.1 . . We need to prepare for the struggle.2 It will sound once more, and again—and again. . . And then the doors of repentance will open. . . Let’s all go and fall before the merciful Lord—the Father’s arms are open to everyone.3 Let’s throw ourselves into them with bold confidence and vanish into the boundless sea of God’s mercy.4
The Illusion of Self-Indulgence
The author warns against sophistry and self-pity, explaining that spiritual dryness is often a consequence of worldly distraction rather than a natural state.
What N. told you N. is a sophism of self-centeredness and self-pity, based on real experience that has been misunderstood or twisted in its interpretation.5 After noise and diversions, a soul that isn't wholly corrupted pines. The heart, languishing in the stifling feel of an alien atmosphere, withdraws into itself and complains to God and to the person himself that it is being tormented for no reason. So this prayer is the cry of a sick person for healing. The Lord sends these moments of tender compunction after diversions and even during them, to remind a person that he is acting wrongly, wasting time for nothing in vanity and destroying his soul.6 But N. N. takes this as grounds for self-indulgence. That's just like a sick person gulping down poison and crying out. Has the pain eased? Give him more poison. . . So what if he’s gone quiet?7 ! Let him cry out. Is that wise? What’s the point of earnest prayer after all the distractions and festive noise? What does the soul say: "Glory to You, Lord, that I've had my fill of pleasure," or—"I've sinned—Lord, have mercy!"?8 The first is absurd; and to the second you have to add, "I will not," and so give it up: for you cannot deceive God.9 Look at what experience says. The heart's cry after the noise is strong at first, then it weakens; and what’s more—at the beginning, it’s repeated often, but later it becomes more and more rare. . . Eventually, it falls silent altogether. . . Everything grew quiet. The matter settles itself: that's how it has to be. . . By middle age or toward his later years, he'll come to his senses and look back, only to find that he's squandered a great deal on revelry.10 There's little time left. . . It's hard, and there's no point in starting. So be it. . . and despair.11 So go on carousing.12 . . This is the end of a worldly life. And what's more—what kind of philosophy is this: monotony breeds indifference and coldness? The world projects its own ways onto the things of God as well. In created things, monotony really does grow tiresome because they are finite. A glass of sweet water—even if you drink it little by little—you'll still empty it; so it is with every worldly pleasure. The heart drinks all the sweetness out of it, and that's the end. . . After that, it no longer nourishes, and boredom sets in.
The Nature of Spiritual Warmth
True spiritual warmth is a gift of grace that requires patient cultivation, while its absence is often a pedagogical withdrawal meant to humble the soul.
With God, it’s completely different. He is infinite good—enough for everyone and for all ages. In the life to come, all who have prepared themselves will taste this one good; and they themselves will be satisfied and will not exhaust it; yet they will thirst more and more, and expand both in their thirsting and in their tasting. Ask why Fr.13 Seraphim, Fr.14 Parthenius never grew bored with such a monotonous—even the most monotonous—life? Church, then cell; church, then cell. .15 . And then there's reclusion as well.16 . . Lord, have mercy! How can anyone kill themselves like that?17 But they didn't even think about tormenting themselves. . . On the contrary, they lived in blessedness. God's saints did have hours and days of cooling, as they call them; but the reason for that isn't monotony at all—one cause lies with the Lord, and the other is in us.18 The warmth of the spirit comes from the breath of grace. But right beside it sits our self-love. From the long duration of this blessed state, a person either starts blowing his own horn, or claims this good as his own, or grows too confident: "Well, we're settled now for sure."✦19 When this happens within, the Lord takes His grace away and leaves the person alone. And what does a person have left? And so a dullness of taste for everything spiritual is felt, and heaviness, and indifference.20 . . It's just like when all the warmth escapes through an open window. You need to rekindle the fire; but the wood isn’t found in the noise of the world—it’s stored in the Lord’s storehouse.21 Open the storehouse and take what you need. . . Access is open to everyone without hindrance. The key is weeping, repentance, contrition—or simply a patient cry to the Lord, even with no spiritual taste at all, forcing yourself to it.22 . . Then the Lord will restore the warmth again. . . This is what we call an instructive withdrawal of grace.23 We have our own reason for the loss of taste and for growing cold. It's inevitable on the journey of spiritual growth. It's like the saying: you've left one shore but haven't yet reached the other. It's a kind of uncertain state—not the initial one, but later, when you're already on the path.24 . . It comes over you for a while. . . The heart hasn't yet completely left the sensual behind, and hasn't yet fully taken root in the spiritual. Urges from both sides will whirl around and cloud your mind for a while.25 . . And so you experience indifference and a loss of spiritual taste.26 . . Just bear with it for a little while, and it will pass. . . So that's it! . . Come, let's keep working little by little, with patience and by surrendering ourselves to the Lord.27 There's not much left.
The Danger of False Spirituality
The author critiques the reliance on Western spiritual literature, which he argues lacks the depth and authenticity of the Eastern patristic tradition.
The hour will come when we stand before the Lord—and what will we say?✦ That we know how to dance, speak French, and have good taste in stage plays?28 Oh, what trouble! Oh, what grief! Then we'll thrash about this way and that—but it'll already be too late. . . Lord, give me a moment—just a moment. . . We'll repent. . . And it won't be given. . . because they were stirring up prayer with balls and theaters. . . When I was with you and spoke about the intermittent states of warmth of heart, then N. N. , who was also sitting with you, said: "Ah, I was falling into despair because I no longer have that former warmth." . . But at that time I was saying something different. What applies to her is this: in the hope that she would cast off her worldly habits, the Lord visited her with interior consolations; but since she did not heed, and keeps on in the same way,29 . . and so He abandoned her. . . Stick with your theaters.30 . . and go hungry.31 This withdrawal of grace is a chastisement. And it isn't done for ruin, but for instruction. So let him take heed to himself.32 What book was it that disturbed you? . . All Western books on the spiritual life in translation don't suit us.33 There's a scrap of truth in them, but even the very best contain much that is fanciful and false; they tickle, but they don't nourish.34 . . And so it turns out: it ran over the lips, but never got into the mouth.35 Take the best and most highly praised of them: On the Imitation of Jesus Christ, by Thomas à Kempis. . . Read it carefully, and compare whether it gives the same thing as Macarius of Egypt, or Isaac the Syrian, or the sayings of our elders—Seraphim and Parthenius.36 . . Westerners want to save themselves; and by their own efforts they only reach a calm state of heart that resembles inactivity while the other powers keep silent.37 There, their imagination paints images for them, and they swoon over them. . . Drop them. The saints you already have are enough for you.
The Uniqueness of the True Church
Using the analogy of photography, the author defends the unique authenticity of the Orthodox Church as the original tabernacle established by Christ.
Are there a hundred truths? There is one truth. Are there a hundred paths? There is one path. Are there a hundred gods? There is one God, one faith, one baptism.✦ . . So how can it all be the same, then? . . And is that supposed to be equal to us, where there is no priesthood, no Holy38 Communion and repentance?39 How then will our sins be absolved?✦40 . . And what will nourish our spirit? . . This whole philanthropy is nothing like the real thing.41 They can't settle the question: what exactly are these other confessions?42 But just because we can't settle it as we should, that doesn't mean we should twist and misread what is clearly true. Look at what happens in photography. A person's natural self is their truest original.43 Photographers take the pictures and then print them. With one the picture is too dark, with another too light; one missed the focus, another set a pose that didn't suit the person. . . But there are also photographs that are very true to the original. And how much does retouching change the character of the features? Now, looking over all these photographs, can you really say they're all equal, when among them there are some where even the person pictured can't recognize themselves? God said to Moses: "See that you make (the tabernacle) according to the pattern shown you on the mountain" (Ex.✦ 25:40).✦ And so it was until the coming of Christ. When the Lord came, He brought down from heaven another tabernacle for us—the holy44 faith and the Church, arranged just as He saw and heard from the Father—in the eternal counsel of the Trihypostatic God.✦45 But then self-appointed photographers appeared.46 . . Come on, let's touch things up; come on, let's take new pictures — and they piled up a mess.47 . . The face of the Church is one; but in the homemade photographs, one came out with two heads, another with neither hands nor feet; here the eyes are altered, there the clothing is completely wrong — and so on.48 And so on. . . And every one of them has the same caption: the Church. . . You look and look, and you're forced to say: no, this isn't her.49 After this, is it fitting for us, who keep the original of the Church, to put ourselves in line with the others?50 And what about the others? Let's leave it to the Master of the house to deal with them.51 He gives us tangible proof that we have the original: gifts visible to all—miracles, spiritual insight, the incorruption of relics, and extraordinary signs; we see all of this in our own day.5253 . . What more could we want? The Lord won't indulge liars. The Lord is with us, and His Spirit dwells in our Church. . . We can feel this as something tangible.54 . . And so ours is the true Church: brought down from heaven and established on earth.55 And what about the others? As for them, the Lord knows. He doesn't reveal His judgments.56 . . There will be a day when He brings hidden things into the light.✦ . . For now, this ray of unshakable assurance of the truth is enough for us.

Notes
- 1 ↩«Звук трубы» is likely the call to prepare for the Lenten struggle (and may echo biblical trumpet-calls to repentance). Subject is omitted in Russian; second-person plural/formal address is the most natural letter style.
- 2 ↩«Подвиг» here is the ascetical/spiritual contest (not a heroic stunt); «struggle» keeps the Orthodox sense of ascetic effort without over-specifying.
- 3 ↩Source «обятия» read as «объятия» (embraces/arms); «Отчи» as the Father’s.
- 4 ↩«дерзновение» rendered as bold confidence (spiritual boldness before God), not mere recklessness. Source «изчезнем» normalized as «исчезнем».
- 5 ↩самость rendered as self-centeredness (spiritual ego/selfhood); саможаления as self-pity.
- 6 ↩Russian умиление is the soft, grace-touched melting of the heart (tender contrition/devotion), not mere sentimentality; rendered here as tender compunction.
- 7 ↩Particle «де» marks the question as reported or sarcastic speech (the self-indulgent reasoning being mocked), not a neutral inquiry.
- 8 ↩Russian нагулялась is colloquial and feminine: having gone out and enjoyed oneself / had one's fill of revelry; rendered as "had my fill of pleasure" to keep the worldly-amusement force without slang.
- 9 ↩не буду is elliptical for "I will not do it again"; бросить means abandon/quit the pattern of noise and diversion, not merely stop praying.
- 10 ↩накучено is from кутить (to carouse/revel); rendered as squandered in revelry to keep the force of wasted life in pleasure.
- 11 ↩Fragmentary sentence opening with и; likely continues a list or consequence broken across sectioning. Rendered as a short additive phrase pending fuller discourse context.
- 12 ↩Кути is the imperative of кутить (to live it up / carouse / squander oneself in revelry). же adds resigned or ironic force: 'well then, go on and carouse.' Echoes prior накучено in FeofanPisma.1.11.7.s7.
- 13 ↩Source fragment ends mid-phrase: «Спросите, от чего это О.» Most plausible reading takes «О.» as the ecclesiastical abbreviation «о.» for «отец» (Father), continued in s5–s6 as Fr. Seraphim and Fr. Parthenius.
- 14 ↩Fragment «Серафиму, О.» continues the broken question from s4; second «О.» is again read as «о.» (Father) before Парфению in s6.
- 15 ↩Source is only a bare period with no recoverable Russian wording.
- 16 ↩затвор rendered as reclusion (Orthodox monastic enclosure/solitary recluse life), not secular confinement.
- 17 ↩Rhetorical outsider reaction to reclusive monotony (church, cell, enclosure), not literal suicide counsel; 'убивать себя' = destroying oneself by such a life.
- 18 ↩охлаждения: ascetical term for cooling of spiritual fervor (not mere boredom); rendered 'cooling' to keep the heat/cool metaphor rather than generic dryness.
- 19 ↩«трубить пред собою» is the vainglorious image of sounding a trumpet before oneself (cf. Mt 6:2). «чай» here is the colloquial particle ('I suppose / for sure'), not 'tea'.
- 20 ↩«безвкусие» is spiritual tastelessness / loss of savor for spiritual things, not aesthetic bad taste.
- 21 ↩Russian «магазин» here is the older sense 'storehouse/warehouse,' not a modern retail shop.

- 23 ↩Russian «отступление благодати поучительное» is a technical ascetical phrase for a temporary, pedagogical withdrawal of consoling grace; «поучительным» rendered as «instructive» (teaching/pedagogical), not as punitive.
- 24 ↩раздумья: rendered as a hesitating/in-between state of deliberation on the way, not mere idle musing.
- 25 ↩Позывы rendered as 'urges' (interior stirrings/pulls); оттуда и отсюда as 'from both sides' (the sensual and the spiritual poles just named).
- 26 ↩безвкусие rendered as 'loss of spiritual taste' to match the chapter's ongoing theme of потеря вкуса (cooling / dullness of devotion), not mere culinary blandness.

- 28 ↩пиесы is older spelling of пьесы ('plays'); rendered as 'stage plays' for contemporary clarity.
- 29 ↩мирския is pre-reform spelling of мирские, 'worldly'; вняла = heeded/listened; продолжает тоже is open-ended and points into the next section.
- 30 ↩театрами = theaters/plays as worldly diversions; rendered literally to keep Feofan's blunt reproach rather than paraphrasing as 'amusements' or 'entertainments'.
- 31 ↩голодай is imperative 'starve/go hungry'—spiritually, for the withdrawn consolations—not physical fasting as a chosen discipline. Next section names this as a punitive withdrawal of grace.

- 33 ↩нейдут к нам: idiomatic 'do not suit / are not for us' rather than literal 'do not go to us'.
- 34 ↩мечтательнаго: rendered 'fanciful' (dreamy/visionary falsehood), not merely 'imaginative'.
- 35 ↩Folk proverb: apparent feeding that never becomes real intake; keeps the concrete image rather than paraphrasing as 'all show, no substance'.

Letters on the Christian Life companion
Rule yourself daily, not just on retreat
Chosen Portion turns the mirror into a daily practice — a short reading and examining question each morning before you lead anyone.
Chosen Portion makes the mirror daily: the ruler-formation questions this collection preserves become a two-minute morning examination in the app.
- A daily formation reading drawn from centuries of counsel to those in authority
- One pointed examination question a day — two minutes, before the meetings start
- Track your practice over weeks and watch the examined life become a habit
