Chapter 58PonetCatechism.1.58

The lords prayer.

The Master's Question

The master asks the scholar if he knows a set form of prayer.

Master. Do you have any set and appointed way of praying?

Christ's Own Prayer

The scholar identifies the Lord's Prayer as taught by Christ and recites it in full.

Scholar. Yes indeed: exactly the same one that our Lord taught his disciples, and through them all other Christians. When he was once asked to teach them a form of prayer, he taught them this. When you pray, he said, say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

The Doxology and Amen

The prayer concludes with the doxology and a final Amen.

For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.✦ Amen.
