The crede.

Call to Confession

The master affirms the scholar's previous answers and invites him to recite the creed.

Master. You've answered me well so far, my son. Now let's move on to the Christian confession, which I'd like you to recite for me clearly.1

The Apostles' Creed

The scholar assents and recites the entire Apostles' Creed.

Scholar. It will be done. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He went down to hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead. He went up to heaven; he sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit. I believe the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the rising again of the flesh, and the life everlasting.2

Notes

  1. 1 ↩"Christian confession" here means the Creed (the profession of faith), as the next section makes clear by having the Scholar recite it.
  2. 2 ↩Ponet's 'universal' renders the Creed's 'catholic'; the source deliberately avoids 'catholic' as a loanword.
