¶ A Prayer for the Kinges Maiestye.

Prayer for King Edward VI

A prayer asking God to have mercy on the congregation, to guide King Edward VI to seek God's honor, and for subjects to obey him faithfully, concluding with 'Amen.'

Almighty God, whose kingdom is everlasting and whose power is infinite: have mercy on the whole congregation, and so rule the heart of your chosen servant Edward the Sixth, our king and governor, that he—knowing whose minister he is—may above all things seek your honor and glory; and that we his subjects—duly considering whose authority he has—may faithfully serve, honor, and humbly obey him, in you and for you, according to your blessed word and ordinance; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, ever one God, world without end.12 Amen.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Several spans in the witness are damaged or ellipsized (congregation; chosen; our; minister; that; considering; thee; to; ordinance; who with thee; reigneth; end). The translation restores the most plausible liturgical reading of this Edwardian royal prayer; review against a clean witness if one becomes available.
  2. 2 ↩"in you and for you" renders early-modern "in thee, and for thee": obedience to the king as done in God and for God's sake, not as secular flattery.
