Chapter 109PonetCatechism.1.109

Christian mennes gooddes are not commune.

Private Property and Generous Almsgiving

Christians hold private property by rightful title, yet are bound to give alms generously to the poor according to their ability.

Christians don't hold their wealth and property in common regarding legal title and ownership, despite what some Anabaptists falsely claim. Even so, everyone should give alms generously to the poor from what they possess, according to their ability.1

Read the original English

THe riches & gooddes of Christians are not commune, as touchinge the righte title, and possession of the same (as certayn Anabapti…es do fasly boast) not withstanding euery man oughte of such thinges, as he possesseth, li berally to geue almes to the pore, according to his hability.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source reading 'Anabapti…es' is truncated; rendered as 'Anabaptists' from context and chapter sense. 'li berally' is treated as a line-break form of 'liberally'.
