Chapter 104PonetCatechism.1.104

¶ Excommunicate persons are to be auoided.

Avoiding the Excommunicated

A person rightly excommunicated by the church is to be treated by all the faithful as a heathen and tax collector until he is openly reconciled through penance and readmitted by proper authority.

That person who, by the church's open denunciation, is rightly cut off from the unity of the Church and excommunicated ought to be treated by the whole multitude of the faithful as a heathen and a tax collector, until he is openly reconciled by penance and received into the church by a judge who has authority to do so.✦12

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Matt.18.17 — And if they refuse to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if they refuse even to listen to the church, let them be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source damaged at "v…ti"; read as "unity" (Early Modern "vnitie"), which fits "cut off from the unity of the Church."
  2. 2 ↩Source "bipenance" treated as "by penance" (by + penance), the expected formula for open reconciliation after excommunication.
