¶ Of the perfecte oblation of Christ made vpon the crosse.

Christ's Perfect Sacrifice vs. Mass-Sacrifice

Christ's once-for-all offering is the sole satisfaction for sin, rendering Mass-sacrifices for the living and dead as deceptive fables.

The offering of Christ, made once for all time, is the perfect redemption, the appeasing of God's displeasure, and the satisfaction for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual; and there is no other satisfaction for sin but that alone. So the sacrifices of Masses, in which it was commonly said that the priest offered Christ for the living and the dead to obtain remission of pain or sin, were forged fables and dangerous deceits.1

Notes

  1. 1 ↩In sixteenth-century usage, 'pain' (payne) typically means penalty or punishment for sin (Latin poena), often in a purgatorial sense, not merely physical suffering.
