Baptism: Sign, Seal, and Church Practice
Baptism is both a sign of Christian profession and a seal of new birth, adoption, and forgiveness, and the Church rightly retains the custom of baptizing young children.
Baptism is not only a sign of profession and a mark of difference, but it is also a sign and seal of our new birth, by which, as by an instrument, those who receive Baptism rightly are grafted into the Church; the promises of the forgiveness of sin, and of our adoption to be the sons of God, are visibly signed and sealed; faith is confirmed; and grace is increased by virtue of prayer to God.1 The Church's custom of baptizing young children is to be commended, and by all means retained in the Church.
