The Latin Poems/Book 2 · Musae Responsoriae
Chapter 3HerbL.2.3

Reverendissimo Episcopo Wintoniensi

A Humble Dedication

The author expresses his hesitation in presenting his work to such a holy figure, ultimately finding confidence that his verses belong to the Bishop.

Holy Father, guardian of heaven, than whom the earth knows no one more learned and the stars see no one more holy; when my words found themselves trapped in trivial verses, they nearly passed by your doors. But it quickly and skillfully brought back my wandering thoughts, teaching me that these writings are suited for you alone.

Sancte Pater, coeli custos, quo doctius uno Terra nihil, nec quo sanctius astra vident; Cum mea futilibus numeris se verba viderent Claudi, pene tuas praeteriere fores. Sed propere dextreque reduxit euntia sensus, Ista docens soli scripta quadrare tibi.
