Von der Schwachheit des Glaubens. Ein Fünklein ist auch Feuer
The Nature of Weak Faith
Even a small, flickering faith is a genuine faith that looks toward Jesus.
Just try it: put on some coals, blow on them, and see if they don't catch fire. A weak faith is still faith. Faith isn't always a burning torch; often, it's just a little smoldering candle. The little candle gives light just as truly as the torch, even if it isn't as bright.1 Faith is the eye with which we look at Jesus. A dim eye is still an eye; a weeping eye is still an eye.2 You sit in tears and cry: Oh, how deeply anxious I am that I can't believe! Oh, if only I could believe!✦
The Trembling Hand of Faith
Longing for faith is itself a sign of faith, and even a trembling hand successfully takes hold of Christ.
My dearest heart, even the one who weeps sincerely over his supposed unbelief believes; for such tears testify to a longing for faith. Gladly wanting to believe counts before God as having already believed.3 God works in us both the willing and the doing; therefore, He can no more despise the one than the other. Faith is the hand by which we take hold of Jesus; a trembling hand is still a hand. Ah, that person believes whose heart trembles in his body when he is to reach out and take hold of Jesus. You often ask: How can I take comfort in the wounds of Jesus? I tremble when I think of my great sin; I'm not worthy of the comfort. And yet that is believing—taking hold of Jesus with a trembling hand.
Faith Beyond Feeling
Faith is grounded in God's promise rather than our own feelings or sensory experiences.
Faith is the tongue by which we taste how kind the Lord is: a tongue weakened in its taste is still a tongue.✦ We believe even when we don't taste a single drop of comfort. Our faith isn't founded on our feelings, but on God's promise. Faith is the foot that carries us to Jesus; a sick foot is still a foot, and whoever comes slowly is still coming. In their faith, a Christian must look not at the how, but at the what.4 What does your faith hold? Jesus. How does it hold him?
Strong in Christ's Grip
Our salvation depends not on our weak grip on Christ, but on Christ's firm grip on us.
Weakly.5 It doesn't matter, as long as it holds Jesus. God has placed blessedness not in your grip, but in the One who is gripped: Christ.6 It's a double hand that helps me to heaven: my hand of faith grasps Jesus and clings to his merit, while Jesus's hand of grace grasps me and comes to the help of my weakness. My grasping and holding is easily loosened again; his grasping and holding is all the firmer. So, all at once, I am weak in myself and strong in my Jesus.

Was hält dein Glaube? Jesum.

Notes
- 1 ↩Early modern 'so wol als' (wohl) means 'as well / just as truly as,' not merely 'as cheerfully as.' The point is genuine light, not equal brightness.
- 2 ↩Early modern 'blödes Aug' means dim, dull, or weak-sighted, not modern 'stupid.' Rendered as 'dim' to keep the optical metaphor and avoid anachronistic insult.
- 3 ↩German 'Gern wollen glauben, heißt vor Gott geglaubt' equates the earnest will to believe with faith as God reckons it—not mere wishful thinking, but a will oriented toward faith.
- 4 ↩auf's wie ... was: not the manner or strength of believing, but the object held by faith (clarified in the following Q&A).
- 5 ↩One-word answer to the previous question 'How does it hold him?' (Erquickstunden.1.26.3.s8). schwächlich = weakly/feebly, naming the manner of faith's hold, not denying that it holds.
- 6 ↩Seligkeit rendered as blessedness (eternal well-being/salvation). Griff / Ergriffenen keep the grip-grasp wordplay: blessedness rests not in the strength of our hold, but in Christ, the One held.
