§ V

The Root of Blindness

Neglecting prayer causes ignorance of God's will, faults, and duties, leading to deadly blindness for princes.

Haven't you neglected prayer—asking God for knowledge of his will for you? Have you sought in prayer the grace to profit from your reading? If you've neglected to pray, you've made yourself guilty of all the ignorance you've lived in—ignorance the spirit of prayer would have taken from you. It's little enough to read the eternal truths if you don't pray for the gift of understanding them well. Not having prayed well, you've deserved the darkness in which God has left you concerning the correction of your faults, and concerning the fulfillment of your12 duties.3 So negligence, lukewarmness, and willful distraction in prayer—which usually pass for the lightest of all faults—are nonetheless the true source of the ignorance and deadly blindness in which most princes live.
