Article premier. De l'instruction nécessaire à un prince — § I
The Prince's Gospel Instruction
A prince must know the truths of Christianity thoroughly, study the divine law as his rule, and read the Gospel with humble teachability in order to govern justly and be judged by it.
Do you know all the truths of Christianity well enough?1 You'll be judged by the Gospel just like the least of your subjects.2 Do you study your duties in this divine law? Would you allow a magistrate to judge the people every day in your name without knowing your laws and ordinances, which must be the rule of his judgments?3 Do you hope that God will allow you to remain ignorant of his law—the law by which he wants you to live and to govern his people? Do you read the Gospel without idle curiosity, with humble teachability, in a spirit of practice, turning against yourself to condemn yourself in everything this law will reprove in you?4
