§ XV
Tolerating Injustice
A call to examine personal tolerance of injustice.
Haven't you tolerated injustices, even when you yourself refrained from committing them?1
Choosing Leaders
A self-examination on the care and motives behind the appointment of officials.
Have you chosen with enough care all the people you've put in authority—the intendants, the governors, the ministers, and so on? Haven't you chosen any of them out of softness toward those who recommended them to you, or from a secret desire that they would push your authority or your revenues beyond their true limits?2
Overseeing and Correcting
A call to actively oversee officials and to correct them justly when they err.
Have you looked into how they run their offices? Have you made it known that you were ready to hear complaints against them, and to do full justice in those cases? Have you done so when you discovered their faults?3
Notes
- 1 ↩Source reads «pointtoléré» (joined); translated as the obvious intended reading «point toléré» (have you not tolerated).
- 2 ↩«mollesse» rendered as «softness» (weak yielding / indulgent compliance), not mere laziness; the force is moral weakness toward favor-seekers.
- 3 ↩«L'avez-vous faite» resumes «bonne justice» from the previous sentence: have you actually carried out that justice once their faults were known.
